Help adding storage space to a PowerEdge T610

We have a T610 running ESXi 5.0 with a couple of virtual servers. One of those VMs is running out of storage space, and we need to increase the size of the storage. Physically, it appears to have 8 drive bays, with 4 of them filled and 4 empty. It's Perc 6/i, configured with one virtual disk which is RAID 10: four physical disks.

From what I've read, it is not possible to expand the array.

But is it possible to add a second RAID 10 array to this machine, and present it to the VMs as additional storage?

Or is my only option to backup everything, break the array, rebuild from scratch, and restore?

Windows doesn't see Perc 6/i SATA group

I have a Precision R5500 rack mount system with a PERC 6/i controller in it.  On the machine itself right now have slot 0 with one SATA 250GB drive.  In slots 1 - 4 I have 900GB SAS drives.  All from dell.  The per controller sees all the drives.  I have Virtual Disk 0 setup as Raid 0 with the 250GB drive.  I have Virtual Disk 1 setup at Raid 0 with the 4 900GB drives.  All say optimal.  When I load the Windows 7 64-bit installer it only shows me a single "drive" identified by Windows as "Disk 1" of 3351.0GB.  Thoughts?  I can't find a driver for the per card other than saying it uses windows built in one.

JR

EDIT: Card is set to enable controller BIOS and VD 0 of 237952 MB (The SATA one) is set to the boot device).  Also if I delete the VD's and only create one with the SATA drive nothing shows in Window setup.  Do the PERC drivers load in initial setup and if so are there different drivers if the drive being used is SATA?

Dell Server R210 SAS6/iR 1 Drive Failed HELP!

On my Dell Server R210 one of my drives failed. Inside the Server I see a HDD0 and HDD1.

I found out that HDD1 failed. I took the HDD1 out and replaced it with another Hard-Disk (I am positive that it is compatible)

I booted up the server but it did not copy the information from HDD0.

I downloaded OpenManage and I see two working Physical Disks. 1:4 and 1:5 (Both at a Ready State)

Someone told me to do the HOT SPARE on the drop down list to mirror the drives, but, there are no options, I only see No Task Available

HELP!

Migrate from RAID 5 PERC4 Dell PE800 to Dell T320 on Perc H310

Hi,

I had a server that failed before we had the time to replace it.

The old server won't boot (no display maybe de motherboard failure). Can i insert disk on the new server and try to import raid disk config ?

I know it will work from the same PERC chip, but from PERC4 to PERC 310, i think it will not work?

Monitoring Script for PERC H710 Battery State

HI,

I am writing a simple script to warn me of battery problems on PERC H710 raid controllers. The script will run the megacli command and and then parses the output.

I am thinking one of these parameters:

Battery State: I know of Optimal and Degraded states. Are there any other?

Relative State of Charge: What is a minimum acceptable threshold?

Replace faulty Perc 5/ir controller on PE 840 server - there is no valid backup available!

I have a new customer who brought in his PE 840 server with a Perc 5/ir that is not booting intermittently. Sometimes it would give error "PCIe training error slot 1, system halted" during POST.  (issues with RAID controller)  Sometimes it would POST and and hang on the Windows splash screen, no HDD activity. Rudely cutting the power and trying again would work, then examining the event logs showed no rude shutdown.  Sometimes, POST worked out, drives come to life and I could log into windows and check out the OS as if nothing was wrong.  I was able to determine that there are no file system problems, no relevant errors in Windows logs. OpenManage had no flags, no out of date firmware or drivers, no "Failure Predicted" on the disks.

Also, I discovered there has NEVER been a successful backup over several years.  This customer must have thought magical elves were managing his backups, I don't know.

I pulled the RAID controller and discovered 2 bulged/leaking capacitors, called Dell and managed to get the correct part number for the part, but since the system is long out of warranty, no other concrete assistance was provided.  I ordered the part from ServerSupply and it will be here tomorrow.

I put the bad part back in so I could attempt to boot up and get an image backup using ShadowProtect, but now the problem is not intermittent, and I cannot get past the PCIe Training error, I'm stuck without backup.

The system is  RAID 1, a pair of SAS 15k drives.  No backup. Repeat, no backup.   Out of fear that I will hose his data, I ask,  what precautions do I take when replacing this RAID controller so that I don't destroy the data? How do I do this?

R610 SAS6 Raid 1 Drive Replacement Problem

We have a R610 with a SAS6 controller. We have 2 drives (slot 0 and 1) setup in a raid 1. The drive in slot 0 has failed. We have a replacement drive, however when we installed it (slot 0), the SAS6 controller is not detecting it. We tried to configure it via the ctrl-c text based configuration utility. We plugged the replacement drive in another host and confirmed it still works. Any thoughts on what else we can do? The drive is same make/model as the dead drive.

Preload H710p Windows driver prior to PERC6/i to H710p migration?

I have a PowerEdge 2950 III with 4 drives in RAID6 on PERC 6/i.  The OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 Ent.  I would like to move the drives over to a new R720 with H710p.   Is there a way to preload the H710p driver on the existing system so as to avoid a BSOD when booting Windows on the new R720?  I tried running the Dell package "Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 SP1 64 Bit Driver for Dell PERC H310/H710/H710P/H810/SPERC8 Controllers" on the 2950, but it gave me an error message that the package was not supported on that system.

My other thought was to do an in-place upgrade of the 2950's OS from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 and hopefully the H710p drivers are already built into 2012 R2 ?

Dell PowerEdge 840 not recognizing hard drives.

I have a Dell PowerEdge 840 server that doesn't recognize any hard drives I hook up to it. It didn't have any drives in it when I got it, so it doesn't have an operating system installed. I have three SATA drives that I'm trying to use (and I bought specifically for the server); a 1TB, 2TB, and 3TB. I've tried to boot with all of them installed, and I've tried to boot with one of them installed. But none of them are working here. In the BIOS, it says Unknown Device under all of the SATA ports. I'm not real experienced with servers, so I really don't know what to do here. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

PowerEdge 2950. Need advice to add 1TB SATA drive.

This is my first post.

I have a PowerEdge 2950 with PERC 5/i.  The firmware version is 5.2.2-0072.   The PERC configuration shows controller 0.   Controller 0 has 2 physical SAS drives.  The 2 physical drives are used to create one virtual drive.  The virtual drive is used as the C: drive.  The drives work great.

I want to add a 1 TB SATA drive which will act as a stand alone D: drive.  I had planned to add the SATA drive under controller 1, but when I run the PERC configuration utility, I do not see controller 1.

What do I need to do to add a 1 TB SATA drive?

Poweredge 1800 with Raid 5 scsi

Hello and happy new year!

I have an older Poweredge 1800 with a Raid 5 array of scsi and would like to swap them out as I migrate away from Windows 2003 Server.

Current issues are:

1)  OS partition is virtually full or full on a regular basis, interfering with print spooler.

2)  Upgrading to Server 2008 for greater HIPAA compliance.  Do NOT want to utilize cloud storage.

3)  SCSI are not as available and more expensive as time goes by.

My goal would be to use WD Red 1tb drives (more than adequate for my needs) for data and for OS.  But, the server doesn't currently support SATA drives.  I'm looking for a PERC 6i SAS/SATA RAID Controller * to install to operate the drives.

Since I'm NOT an IT type, these are ideas others have thrown my way that have worked for them.

To all out there in forum land...what thoughts come to your great minds?

Process and procedures?

Thank you.

IO operation was retried for disk 0 for VM server W2012

Hello

I have a Virtual Server and I read some errors in the Windows 2012 event logs:

The IO operation at logical block address 0xca9ca8 for Disk 0 was retried( event id 153 / source disk)

These errors frequently appear during backup the virtual machines (VM version VMX-09)

I found one KB article regarding this but it is for server 2008 R2

Any help to fix this issue is highly appreciated.

R320 and H310 support for Dell / Seagate 3Tb SAS with SED ??

$

Hi

I am playing around with a R320 as a test rig (we have a few)

I seem to be having an issue with a Dell Enterprise Plus badged Seagate Constellation ES.2 SED

Dell part no 07GR25 / Seagate Model ST33000652SS

I seem to be able to set it up as a virtual disk, but when I access it is OpenManage I can't drill down to the physical drive info, it just comes up with a blank frame.

That also happens if I try to go to the virtual drive info, although another virtual disk, which doesn't sit on the ES.2, shows all info fine

As there is firmware available for the ES.2 on the R320 support page, I was assuming (I know..) that it should work fine with the H310

Also, if I try to run the firmware update (version RSFE) I get an error "This Update Package is not compatible with your system configuration"

This is on a 2012r2 DataCenter test rig, but have tried on Standard as well.

Anybody have any thoughts, or suggestions?

Thanks
