bare metal restore source PE 2800 - target PE 2900 III
I try to recover a SBS 2011 Windows from PE 2800 to a PE 2900 III (TAG <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>) with perc 6i.No success with Symantec System Recovery 2011 and same with Windows Server Backup.
The Backups are 100% OK!!
I try to Change the source Backup from Nas to the 500GB Cartridge HDD on the PE 2900 - no success.
With the Manual from symantec (diskpart) I destroy additional the build Utility Partition - perhaps a nup..
May be I have not the right Driver for the raid... because i can't see the restore Point in Windows.
Has anybody experience with my case? Sorry I mean it should be so simple in this time...
Bare metal restore - simple... symantec, Acronis... Windows backup... all should it make easy.. but for me... it makes me crazy... Thanks for your advices :)
PERC 6i Controller shows all drives as failed
Hello,
I have a R410 server with a PERC 6i RAID controller which has currently 4 x 250G SATA drives installed. Everything works and life is good. However, I need to replace these drives with bigger ones. So I purchased 4 x 600G drives. I removed the SATA ones and installed the new SAS drives. I cleared the current RAID configuration. The RAID controller detects all 4 drives correctly and shows them as 'Ready'. However, when I try to created any new Virtual Disk (no matter RAID1, 5 or 10) all drives start blinking orange and they are being displayed as 'failed' in the RAID configuration tool. After I reboot the server I am back at square 1 and no virtual disk is being shown, the drives show as ready again and I can start over but with the same result.
So I did some research on this and found a post were someone stated that Dell released several servers which do not allow non-dell certify disks installed in these servers and describes a similar behavior.
Since the post came from a non Dell engineer I wonder how accurate it is and if that is really the issue I am facing here.
Any help is being appreciated.
Thank you
Marcus
Dell Server R210 RAID1
Trying to do a RAID1 with a Hot Spare. I just purchased:
WD Red 1TB NAS Version which says it's RAID-ready. But when I go to SAS Configuration Settings to turn:
Drive1 into Primary
Drive2 into Secondary Hot Spare.
And when I press C to create the array, this is what it says:
WARNING! Current requested configuration is invalid. Requested Array setup may contain an invalid number of disks or requested array type may be unsupported.
Does this mean the drive is not compatible? Also what are the benefits of turning Drive 2 into a Hot Spare what EXACTLY DOES IT DO?
Thank you.
Check storage RAID level remotely
Hello,
I am new to Dell server series, and I have to setup/reconfig some Dell server including 2950/R410/R420/R710 models. Since those servers are in production state (some are virtual machine host) at remote sites, I would like to know if there is a way to check their current RAID setting remotely and without rebooting/interrupting the servers. Also seems that they have no DRAC hardware installed currently. Appreciate for any advice.
Best Regards
Terence
R510 12 bay system with 2.5" drives
On most PE systems there is a way to split the drive backplane to use both SAS channels. How is this accomplished on a R510?

Cache batteries do not show good in OMSA 7.0
We have hundreds of PowerEdge R910 servers with H700 Raid Controllers where the batteries are reaching the end of life. We are in the process of replacing these batteries as OMSA reports them as being bad. Our research has shown that firmware and driver updates may also be in order. We have had the system administrators upgrade the controller firmware to 12.10.6-0001 and the driver to 5.1.112.64. OMSA on these servers is at 7.0. We may be able to get the system admins to update OMSA if we can prove that the revision is causing a problem.
We have had problems getting good NU209 batteries. We have set up a spare R710 with a Perc 6i controller which has the current firmware and driver. This system has OMSA 7.4 and LSI MegaRaid Manager installed upon it. We have successfully charged and tested NU209 batteries on this system. The batteries report Good in OMSA and through MegaRaid Manager. Some of these battery modules have had the batteries replaced, but have not had the cycle count zeroed out. The "Absolute State of Charge" on these refurbished battery modules is 80% or higher. We can pull a used battery from a decommissioned system and successfully install it in the systems, but this is just a temporary repair as the used battery will not last as long as a new one.
We are trying to determine why these refurbished batteries never show "Good" through OMSA 7.0 on the R910 with the Perc H700 controller. Any help would be appreciated.
How to upgrade the Drives in my H200 RAID to larger size and SATA to SAS
We are upgrading the hard drives in our Dell Poweredge T110 outfitted with a PERC-H200A and two 1TB SATA drives in mirrored RAID. We run the Dell T110 version of ESXi 5.1 and a single Windows Server Essentials 2012 VM.
We wanted to double our Hard Drive capacity and the Dell Support sold us 2x 342-1020 (2TB 7.2K NL SAS,6G,3.5,CB,CK) Drives.
What is the easiest way to replace the existing SATA drives in the RAID with these new drives in the same configuration and EXSi / VM / OS?
Does the RAID Controller handle creating the new RAID and copying the data over somehow?
Do I add the New Drives in a second DiskVolume and Build a Second (SAS) RAID and then somehow clone or copy the original (SATA) RAID over to the New one then switch the boot device to the new (SAS) RAID?
Thank you,
Dan
How to avoid from losing data of RAID disks
We have got new 2 dell PE R720 servers with 4 hard disks each and H310 RAID controllers. We have installed Windows server 2012 R2 on both servers.
I have configured same RAID config on both servers, RAID10 for all 4 hard disks.
Unfortunately, 1 month after installation 1st 2 hard disks of RAID of one server showed error light and server stuck. I shutdown the server, and checked RAID configuration at BIOS. RAID controller showed that there wasn't good RAID config, but only Foreign config. But foreign config showed wrong disk size.
I have lost entire data on the disks.
1 week after, 2nd server's 1st disk of RAID showed error light and server stuck. I didn't figured out that, why server couldn't read from disk when only 1 disk is failed.
I shutdown the server, and checked RAID configuration at BIOS. RAID controller showed that there wasn't good config, but only Foreign config. I have imported foreign config, and restarted then server started working.
Why this errors happens ? How to avoid from those kind of troubles?
Please give me advice, thank you.

Raid 1 / Raid 5 / virtual disks
I am working on a PowerEdge T610 server with Raid 1 & Raid 5 using a Perc 6/i controller. I am preparing to install a new disk to increase the raid 5 array. I am aware that I need to install the drive hot and use the reconfigure task via Storage/Virtual disks. However I have a question. When I "Blink" either virtual disk 0 or virtual disk 1, all five disks blink. So - do I use the virtual disk 1 "Reconfigure" task or does it matter?
Thanks for your help!
Poweredge 2900 - Maximum external USB drive size
Hi,
I inherited responsibility for a Poweredge 2900 server last year. Recently I was asked to mount an NTFS 5TB external USB drive.
This failed with the following message:
$ mount /mnt/external_usb_3
Failed to read last sector (1220940596): Invalid argument
HINTS: Either the volume is a RAID/LDM but it wasn't setup yet,
or it was not setup correctly (e.g. by not using mdadm --build ...),
or a wrong device is tried to be mounted,
or the partition table is corrupt (partition is smaller than NTFS),
or the NTFS boot sector is corrupt (NTFS size is not valid).
Failed to mount '/dev/sdf1': Invalid argument
The device '/dev/sdf1' doesn't have a valid NTFS.
Maybe you selected the wrong device? Or the whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/hda, not /dev/hda1)? Or the other way around?
I know the Poweredge 2900 has an internal HDD limit of 2TB due to the PERC5/i controller. Is this also true for external USB drives? Or is it another HW or OS limitation? I was reading the documentation and could not find (or over-looked) the answer.
Is there any way to mount a drive this size by reformatting/repartitioning?
Thanks,
Brendan
Degraded Virtual Disk RAID 1
I have a PowerEdge R200 that is reporting a degraded Virtual Disk (RAID 1). I replaced the failed drive with a new one, and I still do not see in Dell Server Manager. It's still reporting a degraded drive.
As far as I know, the new drive should have been rebuilt automatically. Could it a bad RAID controller?
SAS 6/iR Adapter.
Thanks,
Adding Second Virtual Disk / RAID Array
Good Day Dear Colleagues!
I need your Help, may be somebody knows
I have the Domain server Dell R420 with Perco H710 controller. And there is 1 Tb HDD inside. It is in RAID 0. System working and starting from here.
I Added 3 Tb more and need to set it. 3 TB HDD don’t determined by OS.
I thought that I need to create a new one Virtual Drive in RAID0 to set new HDD, BUT
I am afraid to damage system on 1 Tb, cause I never do it before.
My question: if I’ll add a new one Virtual Drive in Raid Controller (Dell Perc H710) for new HDD, and I’ll set it, there is no any data lost ?
What I need to do:
Going to F2 menu and creating new VD, I chose new HDD 3 Tb and set RAID to 0.
If it does not entail any consequences associated with the data loss, I can do it myself. Since I'm doing this for the first time, I want to consult.
T320 with PERC H310 - 2012 Server desktop app to monitor/config PERC?
New to Dell. Good stuff. Just put into production a new T320 with a PERC H310.
Is there a Windows desktop app/interface to allow me to see and/or monitor the PERC?
YEARS ago I managed servers that use to have this (HP Proliant world).
I have little interest to power down a server to check a log for the PERC health-
Also, I noted that the PERC does not appear to pass notices to the Windows Server 2012 System Logs. I pulled a drive from the controller while in production, and nothing was noted in the Windows Logs, but the front display panel (itty bitty blue screen) did turn orange and let me know something bad happened. I don't live next to that 1" blue screen, so I'm hoping there are better ways to get notices and information about the health of the drives and the PERC-
Please help a Dell NOOB
Thanks

disks information
we have several dell servers- Poweredge R710, T410, T310 and others.
Iwould like to know if there is a way i can disks and raid infirmation from servers installed with ESXi without restarting the servers and get the info from BIOS or raid controllers?
I tried getting some of the info through the idRAC and the info was somehow not accurate.
all the servers run VMWare ESXi 5.1 and are running a bunch of VM's which is why i can not restart the servers in order to get this information.
thanks.
RAID-5 array is degraded, OS will not start. Need some HELP!
One of our server went down, we need to get some data of it as the backup is outdated.
Server: PowerEdge T110 II
Running a Raid-5 array with three 500gb Seagate drives.
The PERC s300 controller setup shows the Raid 5 vitrual disk as 'degraded'. The physical drives show 0-ready and 1 and 2 - online.
The Dell diagnostics show no problems with disks zero or one. Disk two has error code 4400:247e. Text of the error reads: 'Drive Self-Test failed with error value 0x07' - 'the read/verify scan segment of the self test failed.'
Booting goes to Windows (Windows Server 2008) System Recovery where there is no OS listed, nor is there an stored image available, At the command prompt only the System recovery space (X: ) and the DVD drive is visible. No hard disks.
We do have a spare drive handy. Is there a reliable way to rebuild the array and restore windows, or at the very least restore functionality to the point where we can copy files to a thumb drive from a command prompt?
Thanks
Looking for the right part number for an R415 H700 integrated raid card
Hello,
I have an R415 server with an S300 integrated RAID card and I'm looking for:
Dell PERC H700 Integrated RAID Controller
to install in the integrated RAID controller slot. I don't want to use the PCI-E slot right above for a RAID card because I need it for Ethernet. I would like the 1GB if possible but I think they only designed the integrated H700 card with 512MB.
When I search for Dell PERC H700 Integrated RAID Controller, I get alot of results but cannot get an exact match for an R415 server. I'm concerned that if I get the wrong one, it will not fit right. Please advise on the correct H700 integrated card for an R415.
