Multiple T110 II server failures on the same day!? is this real life!?

Bit of a state of shock here.

Two Dell T110 II servers w/ PERC controllers. Different sites 40 miles away, different networks, (different school districts). They both crashed the same day (the afternoon of 12.9.14). Both with degraded hard drives.. Neither would boot.

I was able to get one of them going - of course the one with a good backup.... The other, I wasn't able to get it to boot. And the backup device had failed several days before and nobody noticed. So now we have a very serious mess as this was their 1 year old Finance server. The drives have already been sent off to try and get the data recovered.

Today I was at the other district, and discovered the other 110 II that had gone down, after doing some research I found out it went down at the same time the other server did... I really wish someone could explain how this has happened!!??

S110 to PERC 710 cable?

Hello,

We have a T620 running Server 2012 R2, and need to upgrade the RAID controller, because the performance is ridiculously poor right now.  We are using 2 TB RAID 1 as OS/data partition.  After talking with a tech, we are going to get a PERC H710, part: 342-3534.  A few questions:

Do I need to purchase an additional cable/connector?  What is the part number?

To save time from doing a complete backup/restore, is there anyway to rebuild the RAID 1 on the new controller without losing data?  I know that may be a bit far fetched...

And one more quick worry; I plan on using Windows Backup to make a system image, and then restore from Windows setup once the new RAID is crated, but I am worried that the drivers for the PERC h710 will not be recognized when it is restored, can anyone confirm this?  Or are there any prevention steps I can take?

Many thanks!

read disk S.M.A.R.T. in PERC H710 Mini?

Hi,

I have a few Dell R520 servers (all running Win 2012 64bit) with PERC H710 Mini Raid controllers inside.

Is there any way to access/see S.M.A.R.T. attributes of their HDDs? Dell OpenManage Server Administrator can only tell info like "physical disk is OK" or "physical disk is Non-Critical", which isn't much. I wanna see more details. On older Dell machines I'm using Crystal Disk Info, but on R520 its not seeing any drives (and other similar utilities I tried were also blind).

(OMSA is in version 7.4.0 and HDDs do have SMART)

Any tips?

Thank you

PowerEdge 840 - No Boot Device Found

I successfully added a SATA hard drive to an 840 and was installing some software when the boot drive disappeared.

It has an Adaptec raid controller (level 5) with 4 disks. On boot the controller is found and I can run the raid utility to verify arrays, verify disks, etc.

I checked the boot order and the controller (forget how it's listed) is no longer in the list. I get CD-ROM and Drive C.

Any ideas how to get the raid array recognized as a boot device again?

Thanks

Optimize PERC for SSD

Hello,

I recently purchased a single SSD drive to use as a vFlash Read Cache resource in a Dell PE R720. The SSD is connected to a PERC H710P. How should I configure the following virtual disk options in the PERC?

1. WRITE POLICY (enable/disable)
2. READ POLICY (Adaptive Read Ahead/No Read Ahead)

Thanks!

Configure iSCSI Volumes

Hello everyone!

Its the first time Installing Ubuntu Server on a Power Edge 2950 to me and
The issue is when it comes to partitioning disks, it said it has detected active SATA drives there - "One or more drives containing Serial ATA RAID configurations have been found. Do you wish to activate these RAID devices? Activate Serial ATA RAID devices. I was given two options "yes" or "no". I clicked "Yes" because I thought this would enable ubuntu server to set up RAID1 during the installation. However, I was brought to the Partition disks that says "This is an overview of your currently configured partitions and mount points. Select a partition to modify its settings...., then there are three options to choose namely:
Configure iSCSI volumes
Undo changes to partitions
Finish partitioning and write changes to disk

So I am not sure if I am doing the write thing here. When I chose "Configure iSCSI volumes", I was prompted to choose either Log into iSCSI targets or Finish. I do not know what to do from here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Dell R410 SAS6/iR controller/backplane/cable failure on two different servers.

I have two Dell R410s manufactured in June of 2010.  The SAS 6/iR controller. the hot swap backplane or cabling is starting to fail.  Both servers have reported a drive gone "missing" in the status within a week of each other.  It's the same exact problem on both servers.  The drive in bay 0 has mysteriously gone "missing".  Replacing the "missing" drives with new drives did NOT fix the problem.  The drives had to be moved to different drive bays in order to get them working again.  There's now a second drive bay gone bad on the of the servers, which is now bay 1.  Again, replacing the drive does NOT help, only moving the drive to another bay and now I'm quickly running out of working drive bays.

Is there a known problem with the Dell R410 with the SAS 6/iR hotswap backplane either with the controller, backplane or related cabling?  This is too much of a coincidence for it to be some random problem.  Two machines manufactured the same day (service tags are one digit apart) both have the same exact problem after a little over 4 years in production.

1 MB/s write speeds on R210 II with SSDs

Hello

I have a couple of R210 II with the Perc H200 controller with 2x Toshiba MK3001GRRB 300GB SAS drives in RAID 1 and 2x Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB drives in RAID 1.

The SSD virtual disk is very slow on writes, even though the Disk Cache Policy is enabled. This is unsuitable for production use, can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!

R520 with PERC H710 see only 6 HDD

Replaced a Predicted Failure drive but can't tell the current status

Howdy,

R410 showed a predictive Failure on one of the hard drives so we hot swapped the drive out.  We did not offline it first since we didn't know that was something we should do.  After putting in the new drive, the LEDs started flashing like crazy as if it was rebuilding the RAID.

I'm just trying to figure out what the server is doing now and can't figure it out.

When I go into OMSA The drive still says Predicted Failure so it hasn't cleared from the first one.  When I drill down to SAS 6/iR Integrated, connector, backplane, etc I get the Physical Disk 0:0:0 which shows Predicted Failure.

The only options I have in the Tasks area are Blink and Unblink.

I'm just trying to figure out if the RAID accepted this drive and is now rebuilding it or if there's a problem or what.  I'd rather not have to take the machine offline if I don't have to.

Thanks for any help.  Let me know what other information I can provide.

T420 Poweredge disks

I've already bought a T420 Poweredge server, with 2 disks 300Gb SAS 2,5 in Raid 1 hot swap and there are 6 room from disk left. I know that's possibile to add other SAS 2.5 disks hotswap, but my question is that: it's possibile to add SATA 2,5 disks hotswap instead SAS 2,5 disks.

I'd like to put togheter SAS and SATA disk . For example have 4 disks 2 SAS 300 Gb for the s.o and 2 SATA disk 1Tb both Raid1 for the data. I don't know if SATA can fit exacty and work well.

In the positive case, do you suggest me some SATA disks models. Thanks in advance.

New U320 drive on Poweredge 2600 with PERC 4/Di only reported as 160 MB/sec

A drive on my Poweredge 2600 with a PERC 4/Di failed. I pulled it out, saw it was a Seagate ST373453LC (Cheetah, 15K, U320). I purchased an OEM ST373453LC from a seller on Amazon. When I put the new drive in my system, OpenManage Server Administrator shows the new drive as only having a Negotiated Speed and a Capable Speed of 160 MB/sec.

There are no applicable jumpers on the drive.

The new drive reports a different Vendor ID, Product ID, and Revision than the other drives in the system.

What do I need to do to get that new drive to act like a proper U320 drive?

T620 w/ H710P Adapter - Getting MultiBit ECC Errors during high write loads

$

One of my T620's with H710P adapters has crashed 3 consecutive weekends in a row when it was receiving lots of data (dozens of VHD files) to be written.  The system is Raid-5 with 5 SAS 600GB disks.

I am pretty sure all drivers are up to date.  The system runs fine when under normal loads but has crashed under heavy loads 3 times now which is of obvious concern.  Any suggestions other than contact Dell support and requesting a new adapter?

Power Edge T310 RAID problems

I have a  T310 server, and the RAID is being reported as degraded when rebooting. I've run Dell Online Diagnostics, and I'm getting a failure on the controller X test, and a read failure on one of the 3 drives. I have replaced failed drives in a RAID 1, but in RAID 5 can I just replace the what appears to be failed drive with one of equal or larger capacity and have it rebuild? Does the controller card need to be replaced, or might the failed drive cause the controller to test as failed?

Hello,

Looking for a little advise - I have a PowerEdge 2600 that has a non-OS RAID-5 array that I would like to expand to the max.  Right now I have 3 279GB SCSI 15k drives and am out of space.  It has a PERC 4/Di controller.

My question is what would be the largest SCSI drives that I could use?

Thank you for your help.

R410 PERC 6/i Question

Recently purchased a Perc6/i PCI card. I plan on using 1 SSD(non-raid) and 3 SAS Drives (RAID5). My question is, what cables would I use? I know I need a battery to power the Perc6/i, but I have tried looking around for the appropriate cables as system came with power integrating with SATA ports to combine as one cable.

PowerEdge R610 with SATA Drives

We have a PowerEdge R610 that takes SAS drives.  We would like to use SATA drives instead.

To do this on our PowerEdge 2950 we had to purchase an interposer that translated between SAS and SATA.

Is this what would need to be done on the R610?  If so does anyone know the part number for the Interposer for the R610 and where to buy?

Ps.  I have searched everywhere for this info and even called Dell tech support for this info.  They gave me the part number for the 2950 :-/

PowerEdge R710 with 4 Disk Array with Perc 6i

hi Everyone,

I have six disks in my R710 with Perc 6i:

Disk 0,1 is a RAID 1 array

Disk 2,3 are both 2 TB SAS

Disk 4,5 are both 2 TB SAS

My disk 5 shows a state of foreign and in the dropdown for the disk, I do not see "clear". My only options are blink and unblink. How do I fix this?

My second question is once I get this cleared, Can I create a 4 disk array using Disk 2,3 on Connector 0 and Disk 4,5 on Connector 1?
