PERC 5/i RAID connectors doesn't match with RAID disk arrays

I refer this about a PowerEdge 2950 released in Oct. 2010.
BIOS version is 2.7.0.
PERC 5/i firmware version is 5.2.2-0072.

SATA Connector 0 shows 4 disks (from 0:0:0 to 0:0:3);
SATA Connector 1 shows 2 disks (1:0:0 and 1:0:1).

RAID-5 arrays are set as follows:
"sys" (3 disks, from 0:0:0 to 0:0:2)
"data" (3 disks, 0:0:3 AND 1:0:0 and 1:0:1).

As you can see, there's a disk, 0:0:3, that belongs to connector 0 but is also combined with the disks from connector 1 to form the "data" RAID-5 array... o_O

I realised it when recently I replaced a failed disk, connected as 0:0:0. I really can't say if anything has changed after the replacement... Nothing found in OpenEdge to help me to understand if this could be an issue or not.

I'm available for any further explanation. Looking forward.

Dell PowerEdge R720 with PERCH 310 mini RAID adapter and SAS/SATA drives...

DISREGARD QUESTION. AMATEUR-101 OVER HERE. DRIVES WERE MOUNTED IN THE WRONG BRACKET ALIGNMENT AND HENCE, WE'RE MAKING CONTACT WITH THE SAS AND POWER CONNECTORS IN THE BACKPLANE. SO ROOKIE OF ME!

I recently obtained some six (new) 1.2 TB Dell SAS 10K 2.5" drives to expand our server. It currently had four 500 GB SATA drives setup as RAID-5. My objective is to ad six 1.2 TB SAS drives and configure in a new ARRAY as raid-10 and use 2 of the existing SATA drives as a separate RAID-1 array. Problem is, the PERCH 310 interface doesn't see any of the SAS drives I've plugged into the hot swap interface. I've tried removing and re-plugging, moving slots, checking cabling, etc. I updated everything on the PowerEdge R720 via the LifeCycle Controller so everything is current, including the PERCH 310 and the system BIOS. Still doesn't see the 6 SAS drives. Any thoughts?

Poweredge R630, Perc H330 Raid Controller

Hi

I am hoping someone can help.  We were supplied a Poweredge R630 server with no Raid controller.  After multiple issues with the SD Cards we want to get a Hardware Raid controller in the server for running Xencenter.

We were able to buy the PERC H330 Raid controller but have been able to find the cables anywhere for this.  I phoned Dell and they passed me onto their parts suppliers in the UK but failed to phone me back after contacting them 3 times.

Does anyone know where I can get these cables?

Link for the raid card is below.

Thanks in advance for any help

PERC 9 and 'disk cache policy'

$

PERC 9 has a virtual disk setting for "disk cache policy".  The help in OpenManage says it's disabled by default for SAS but with the latest OpenManage I find it's enabled.

Previous posts have described this setting as applying to write caching not read caching.  Previous posts have discouraged turning it on because of what would happen if power failed to the drive and cache contents were not written to disk.  Seems reasonable.

BUT now Seagate and HGST have things like 'Turbo Boost' and "NVC Quick Cache" that are non-volatile approaches to write caching.  Of course any 512e drive has to have a non-volatile approach to write caching.

So I'm wondering if the best practice to this setting:

1.) Depends on the way caching is implemented in the drive.  If it's volatile caution is warranted concerning how much faith you have in your UPS.

2.) For any SAS drives shipped recently just turn it on?

Updating Disk Firmware on R710

$

Hi this is my first post on this forum I'm not sure if this problem is an issue with my R710 or if it is a problem with the PERC6i in it. I've tried searching and so far my google foo has come up with nothing except for scary solutions that I don't want to attempt.

I recently purchased some dell branded ST2000NM0023 disks for my server. I noticed the firmware on them appears to out of date (GE09 is what is show in megacli) latest version is GS15 released in 2017. I decided it would be good to update the disks before I start loading them up with data so I went and grabbed the Windows executable to update to version GS15. For some reason when I run the executable it waits 10 seconds then an error message appears saying that it is not compatible with my system. Right now I have server 2012 installed and grabbed the .exe listed as compatible with server 2012 and ST2000NM0023 from dell.com/support.

I thought that maybe it was an issue with disk IO since the OS was installed on the raid arrary so I then downloaded the EFI version of Nautilus Disk Updater (also listed for the R710). Nautilus boots up in EFI mode but there are no options in the menu and all input boxes are blank. I thought that maybe it was an issue with the R710 (all firmware is up to date using LCC) and downloaded the DOS version of Nautilus. The DOS version was a little more helpful and said that it doesn't support the SAS 3GB/s controllers so I could eliminate Nautilus as being an option to update it.

So I did some more reading and it sounds like you can update the drives directly from LSI's megacli utility using the -pdfwdownload option. I took a look at this option but I have some issues with it, it looks like megacli expects the disk to do its own verification. This is a scary prospect as I don't know much about how a SAS disk verifies if a firmware file is the right one and to make matters worse Nautilus version A19 has two different firmware files for the Seagate Megaladon disk so I can't even determine which one is the right option. For now I'm just going to stick with the current firmware version and hope for the best unless someone has a workaround for this problem.

I tried downloading the .bin file for Redhat and tried using it on centos but it looks like the bin verifies if its running on redhat so it didn't run either. I'm not sure if this is a common problem but would like to hear how other users have got around this problem. Would buying a H700 and using that instead solve this in my case?

DELL PowerEdge R730 Server; Adding 3 new HD's to RAID 6 with 5 HD's

I have a DELL PowerEdge R730 Server, which was ordered from Dell with 5 1.2TB 2.5" HD's which are configured in RAID 6. I purchased 3 more HD's of the same size/capacity to add to the array from Dell. The HD's are physically seated fine, however I am unable to add them to the array. The 3 new HD's show as being 'Seagate', whereas the 5 that came with the server on initial purchase show as 'Dell'. The 3 new HD's show as online, but with a non critical warning icon and are not availible to add in the reconfigure array wizard.

Is the make/model of HD an issue here, should all 8 HD's be indentical? Is there a procedure unique to Dell for adding HD's to a RAID 6 array i should follow?

Service Tag: <Service Tag Removed>

Service Request: 955804858

Stated with message that one of drives failed, Drive 0, was indicated on tower display, just powered down ordered new one from Dell, slid it in and powered on now says no drives so I go into config and seems OK, Virtual drive is there and drive 1 is online so I start rebuild on Drive 0.

Come back an hour later and says 'failed' next to drive zero.  restart, comes up all still ok but says next to Drive 0 foreign.

Do some research to see if clearing foreign is safe and won't lose data, come back and boot up but before I can do it now VD Mgmt says

-Controller 0 - No Configuration Present and lists DG Count:0  VD Count: 0 and PD : 2 and then go to Foreign View and get

VD Count :1 PD Count :2 Dedicated HS: 0

Controller 0

-Disk Group 0(Foreign)  [this is greyed out]

    -Physical Disks

-00:00 Offline: 500GB(Foreign)    [This is the new drive and line is greyed out]

-00:01  Online 500GB(Foreign)   [Now this one is also greyed out and now foreign 2]

      -Space Allocation

               - Virtual Disk 0                             [Also Greyed Out]

Don't even care if I don't have raid any more, just need to get machine up and running.  Help, please, thanks, pete.

RAID Configuration Status

Hi everyone ,

Please allow me to ask about some points here , and i am sorry if it was asked before. but i need an exact explanation for my questions if you can please ,

1- what is the role of the RAID Battery in the server?!!! and what happened if it was bad or faulty ?

2-on a server have a 7 Drives "as example" with Raid 5 Configuration ,and while the server is working and UP what happened if i removed one of the SAS Hard disk Drives out of the server?!! and what happened if i attatched it again after a while ?? does this will corrupt the RAID Array or make data loss or the server will stop working?!

3-on a server have a 7 Drives "as example" with Raid 5 Configuration , and while the server is OFF and Shutted Down , what will happened if i remove one of the SAS Hard Disk Drives and returne it Back ?!! does this will corrupt the RAID array and make data loss ??!!

4-in case of Dell Poweredge servers like the R730 Model, if i have a RAID arary on a working server and one of the drives failed , how can i replace this faulty drive and rebuild the RAID array again without data loss? ; do i will need to shut down the server to rebuild the RAID or it will reBuilt it self Automatically ?!! also do i need to go to Life cycle controller to modify or reconfigure anything to rebuild the array??!!

sorry for the long questions , but i appreciated your answers and efforts here at Dell Community.

Thanks

Upgraded Perc 6/i to H700 OS is now unbootable "Unable to access Boot Device

So i installed the new H700 raid card today imported the foreign configuration (at this point I may or may not have left the ctrl+N raid config menu) I had assumed the import was quick. Anyway as the title suggests I can no longer boot to the OS.

I have checked the disks 100 ways and all the partitions are showing via diskpart as well as the windows install disk. I have tried all the bootsec *** too and I cannot understand that if the raid is showing as Virtual Disk 1 and 0 and it seems all the partitions are in tact and the sub directories seem to be there what happened and why can't i get it to boot?
