Poweredge 2900, Drive Replacement Failure

$
0
0

I had a drive report via the SMART diag that a failure was predicted, so I ordered a new drive and replaced it hot swap.  During the rebuild of the array, the second drive predicted a failure.  I went ahead and ordered a second new drive to replace the second failed drive.  During the wait period for the second drive, the first drive, which is brand new from Dell, decided it was going to predict a failure.  I'm thinking there might be a bigger issue but I am not sure where or how to look.

This is an older win2003 server with no diagnostics installed without connection to the internet.  I have been using DSET to read the logs and generate reports.

PERC S100 on T310 RAID

I had 3 hard drives in this server.  The controller read that disk 0:0 was READY (not online) and there were 2 Virtual Disks.  (One was my VD and the other was a mysterious non-RAID VD that I assume was created because disk 0:0 was in a Ready state)

My main VD was listed as degraded.

To be safe since I was not sure what disk 0:0 was up to, I put a 4th hard drive in and assigned it as Global Hot Spare and it went through a rebuild.  Once finished, now my VD has physical disks 0:1, 0:2, 0:3 stating all online, but the VD still says FAILED.  Physical Disk 0:3 (the new one) looks to be part of the group but it is still listed as a global spare?  See picture.

I am at a loss here how to get the VD back to good.

Perc 4 HDD fails on RAID 5 even after have been replaced with a new spare part

Dear All,

I have the following issue on Raid 5 of 3 HDD 146GB. One of the HDD has failed some days ago showing the amber led, then we have replaced the failing HDD with a new one of same capacity but different brand. After replacement, the new HDD still shows amber led and rebuild phase is not started automatically. What could be the reason? What are the suggested steps to follow in order to make the right troubleshooting?

Thanks in advance.

PERC 6/I to H700 migration - Foreign config grayed out

$

I am attempting to migrate the RAID configuration on a PowerEdge T610 server from its original PERC 6/I controller to a new H700 unit.  However, while the drives show as existing when I boot the server into the RAID controller with Ctrl+R, "Foreign Config" is grayed out, and I cannot import the configuration.  It's as if the controller does not recognize there was a previous config.

If I put the PERC 6/i back into the system, it finds the logical drive just fine.  Both controllers are on the latest firmware.  I would really like to do this without having to re-config and restore from backup.  Everything I have read on this forum and others says it should be possible; if anyone can offer some assistance, I would appreciate it.

Dell PowerEdge C2100 FS12-TY Unknown Expander, PERC 6i/r - error(?) dDm

We have a couple 12 bay C2100s we recently acquired. Unfortunately we cannot get it to work right. When we attempt to enter the raid configuration utility it says "dDm" and then hangs, we have to pull the plug to reset it. We tried it on all of them. We switched out the PERC 6i/r with another one and then it gives us a "direct drive mapping" error. The  firmware on the PERC 6i/r pre-installed doesn't exist anywhere.

We've never seen the message "dDm" before, so we don't know what to make of it.

Dell Power Edge 1900 Raid5 with a FAILED Drive

$

This may be a straight forward process...But after reading similar posts it has me wary of messing with any RAID5 array..So I thought it wise to seek advice\instruction before attempting any repairs or making any changes...

The good news... This doesn't  appear to be as perilous a situation as many others have posted...System is up and running...just a little slow.

The bad news....I have a FAILED hard drive on my  PowerEdge 1900 running Server 2003 Standard 32bit

It's a simple RAID5 array with (3) Seagate SATA 750GB drives using the PERC 5i Controller..

I have 2 used Seagate 750GB drive from a Server that  was decommissioned....exact same model as the failed drive...

My question is whats the process/procedure to remove this FAILED drive for the array and then install the replacement drive? Specifically regarding the PERC utility...

Is the Dell Open Management  software necessary in addressing this issue? As it is not currently installed....May need to download and install it..

Do I have to be concerned about wiping the used drive I am planning on use as a replacement?  I do not want to run into and FOREIGN CONTAINER issues...I guess...

Thanks

Mike

Brand new PE T320 slow writing speed

Hello Dell Community,

I'm having some HDD speed issue on a brand new PE T320 server. I made some testing and comparison to another PE T320 server that's running a good speed. Both servers have the same PERC H310 controller.

Actions Done:

Updated all the drivers and firmwares of the server components.

Performed CrystalDiskMark test:

Server A ( Brand new) - Seq Write : 70.93MB/s // 512K Write:45.90 MB/s //4K Write: 0.487MB/s

OS: Server 2012 R2

Server B (Operational) - Seq Write : 146.6MB/s // 512K Write:95.64 MB/s //4K Write: 1.311MB/s

OS:Server 2008 R2

I've noticed that discrepancy between the two is the disk cache policy. Server B has an option or enabled disk cache policy.

Any suggestions please?Thanks.

PERC 6/E and PERC 6/i Firmware Download - Is this actually the same file?

My Dell PowerEdge R710 has both the PERC 6/i and PERC 6/E installed. Both with active RAID arrays. I'm doing a system update (BIOS, iDRAC, Lifecycle, OpenManage, and PERC firmware). I notice that I've downloaded two firmware DUP files for the PERC 6/i and 6/E and they appear to be identical in every way except name.

Do I run both?

  • SAS-RAID_Firmware_3H5G8_WN32_6.3.3-0002_X00.EXE

Raid card upgrade issue with BSOD on boot

$

HI,

I have a Dell R510 PE server which has a Perc H200 integrated raid controller in it with 2 x 600GB SAS drives in raid 1.

I have struggled with disk performance and after doing a lot of reading found that i would get some performance improvements from upgrading to a better raid card.

I ordered a Dell H700 card and attempted the upgrade last night.

The instructions were as follows:

Power down server.
Plug in new raid controller into server in a spare pcie slot leaving the H200 in place with drives attached.
When into windows (SBS2011) load the latest driver for the H710.
Power down server.
Take out H200 and put in place the H700 and attached drives.
Boot server and go into raid controller.
Import foreign config.
Save and reboot.

Now to this point everything went well until the server tries to boot into windows it gets to the splash screen with the horizontal bar and then blue screens with inaccessible boot device.

I have now gone back to the H200 but the raid has been wiped out so im now running without raid.

I understand that this could be down to a registry entry on the new card not being set to start.

I found the percsas2 entry in HKLM\SYSTEM\CCS\services\ and set it to 3 which seems to be what the old card is set to but im still getting BSOD.

Any ideas?

thanks

Are Different Size Virtual Disks using H710 in RAID 5 work?

$

Hi,

I have a T420 with a H710 running W2012R2. I have 8 x HDD's running off the H710. 3 are configured as RAID 0 with the remaining 5 (2TB's each) configured as RAID 5.

I divided the RAID 5 into 6 Virtual Disks of different sizes to create pseudo partitions. I then initialised each VD. (My rationale for doing this was to enable my backup/imaging product to treat each VD separately).

However, I am getting disk errors posted in Event Viewer from the RAID when I try to format the VD's within Windows. My system freezes, Disk Management becomes inaccessible & I have to reboot.

Clearly there's something wrong. I am left wondering whether you can have multiple VD's of different sizes in RAID 5.

Any help or advise would be very much appreciated.

System Info:

T110 II  Intel Xeon CPU E31220@3.10 GHz

8GB Ram

Server OS 2011 Small Business Server Essentials

1 x 4TB SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB Cache, WD40EZRX

3 x 1TB SAS 6Gb/s, Dell SeaGate, ST1000NM0001

 - The WD40EZRX drive only come up as 1.9TB in the Perc screen. I have the latest firmware(A06) and now the latest bios(2.8.0). The 3 ST1000NM0001 come up as RAID5.

I continue to receive the 'Error: Update package is not compatible with your system configuration.'

I want to put these drives together in a raid 5 but, the WD40EZRX comes across as a Volume disk. More, it will not show as available in the file explorer. I want to set up the new WD40EZRX as another server disk for our files to go into and to be accessible for use.

All help would be appreciated.

H700i on R610

Replaced 6i with a H700i (part #0xxfvx) on one of our R610s.  Removed 6i and installed 700 in same slot.  (Yes we purchased from Ebay with card, cables and battery as a set...)   When we boot now we get PCIe Training Error: Integrated RAID SYSTEM HALTED regardless of what we try.  We have reflashed BIOS to 6.4.0.  Cleared NVRAM. Tried to boot to every option....  The only thing we can do currently is remove the card and boot to USB to flash.  Any ideas? Did we miss a step during install?  Does the server need some sort of driver or firmware update to recognize it? Bad card?

Change from raid 0 to raid 1

Hello.

My name is George.

I was recently hired in a new environment,
where i came across an installation of a PowerEdge Server T110ii.

The Server has 2 built in SATA HDDs, both setup as RAID 0.

The problem is that the previous IT has setup WMvare in one of the drives, while the other one was disconnected, (noone knows why).

I want to backup to the second HDD the whole driver, because the free version of the VMware, does not allow backups.

Is there a way to create a raid between the 2 disks, without having to format them, or shutdown the whole system? The factory here is operational 24/7, so i really have very limited options.

Thank you in advance.

Unable to install OS on PE2850 after RAID 5 failover

Hello,

I have a PE 2850 server with controller raid Perc 4e/Di with attached 4 HD SCSI Ultra 320 on 146GB configured in RAID 5 mode.

4 months ago, 2 HD of RAID 5 was corrupted and we decided to switch off definitively because we don't want to substitute HD corrupted.

Before trash it, I tried to install Windows 2003 R2 SP2 using 1 HD in RAID 0 mode (I tried with Win 2k8 R2 but it have the same issue).

Here is the list of the operations done:
- before swith on server I leaved only 1 HD at position 0 inside
- During POST, I choose CTRL+M to enter into RAID controller BIOS but it presents presents a message: "Memory/Battery problems were detected. The adapter has recovered but cache data may be lost. Press any key to continue. " I choosed space key to continue.
- Cleaned existing RAID configuration
- cleaned existing data on physical HD (no error found on HD)
- I configured RAID 0 logical disk in RAID 0 mode and initialized it. I saved configuration, inserted Win 2k3 r2 SP2 CD  and restarted server.
- During POST, the RAID controller presents the same message "Memory/Battery problems were detected. The adapter has recovered but cache data may be lost. Press any key to continue. ". I choosed space key to continue.
- Windows setup started and after agree conditions, I choosed to install Windows into unique logical disk visibile, formatting it in NTFS mode.
- after formatting disk, Windows start to copy file on HD but it stop before ends (1st time at 6%, 2nd time at 8%).

I tried to change RAID 0 write mode configuration from WRITE BACK to WRITE TROUGH but the issue was the same.
The same happen if I tried to install Windows 2008 R2.
It is a problem of HD corrupted? I tried all operation above with other HD but issue was the same.

I don't understand if the problem was the controller RAID or HD.

Any help will be apprecied, thanks.

Help with H700 and battery issue.

Hello

I am running PERC H700 in PE T110II.  Latest FW. When I open Dell OpenManager it shows red X against battery status.  I thought this was an issue with either battery or controller and got a different controller with battery.  However, another controller show the same thing.  I did try to manually start learning cycle multiple times, but it didn't help.  So, what can it be, as i don't believe that both controllers and batteries can be bad simultaneously.

Thanks

Precision Rack 7910 - HDD Caddy

Hello,

I realise this machine is not a server, however there is no option for workstations.

I recently purchased the above server, I ordered it with 5 hard drives.

When the machine arrived only 2 of the hard drives came with a caddy, the other 3 hard drives were in boxes with no caddy.

I called dell and they said the would order them for me. 3 weeks later I am still waiting for them. I have called dell numerous times but today they have told me that they no longer supply them and that I can if I wish return the workstation.

Can anyone tell me if this is correct?

Thank You

Mike

Dell PE 2900 Amber light with new replaced disk

$

I have a Power Edge 2900 server at my work. Recently, one of the drive failed and started to flash green and amber (Note there are five drive in Raid 5). I replaced that hard drive with a new one I bought from Dell and let it rebuild. The next day, the same drive was flashing green and amber again.

Could someone help me finding the cause to this?

Thank you,

Working on a remote Dell 2950 trying to replace

Noob here so please bear with me...Im using the Dell open system manage version Version 5.2.0

Server is a old Power edge 2950. They had 2-75gbs HD's installed but one of them was showing as physical disk as "removed" with a red X on it. It was stating this along with "Virtual disk degraded".

This server was way out of warranty and the customer purchased a replacement drive that was larger that the current drive, new HD is 280 gbs. The customer replaced the drive but its showing as failed in the Dell Open System Manage however it is picking up the new HD specs like the size, model, ect. I assumed it would just start replicating on its own. I do not have access to the server in person so stuff in the BIOS cant be done by me and I would have to direct the staff to do it over the phone.

I have done drive swaps before with newer servers without an issue this is my first real hangup. Any advice?

Thanks everyone
