T610 SAS/6ir Larger RAID1

$

I have a T610 server with a SAS/6ir controller, and 2 RAID 1 arrays. Windows Server 2008 R2 on 250 GB drives and data on 1 TB drives. I need to increase the size of the 1 TB drives. I understand I could theoretically hot swap one of the drives, let the array rebuild. then swap the other, then expand the virtual drive into the extra space. However, I am looking at 3 TB drives, and I believe they need to be GUI partitions while the existing drives are MBR. Is there any way to convert on the fly after the swap is done, or is my best bet to just back up the data, build a new array, and restore?

Thanks for any advice,

Dave

R720xd & PERC H710mini - configuring raid, hard drives are not detected

$

Hi

First of all, please bare with me (if I ask/say really stupid stuff), I just started working with all that.

Setup: R720xd (6x "Constellation ES.3 4TB" in the front, 2x "Enterprise Performance 10K HHD v7" in the back) and a PERC H710 mini

Goal: Raid 5 with the 6 "big" drives and raid 1 with the 2 "small" drives

Current State: everything boots up fine, all the drives are "detected" (= are shown during the boot process). The H710 is detected too, seems to work fine (except I can't access the greyed out "configure virtual/physical drives")

Problem: I'm not able to set up any kind of raid because there are no physical drives (ctrl+r: everything is greyed out, can't do anything). When I tried setting up a raid in the menu (sorry, don't know what it's called) it says that the hard drives need to be initialized with rom during the boot, I can't find that option for my life.

What to do?

Thanks in advance!

Ramsie

Edit:
Found this thread, unfortunately didn't help.

Answer 1: disable integrated raid controller - then the ctrl-r prompt didn't pop

Answer 2: set PERC as boot device - there is no option to do that

Cloning a virtual disk before expanding a RAID 5 system

$

Hi All,

Apologies if this has been answered before, or there is a simple solution I have not yet come across.

I have a Dell Poweredge 2900 with a Perc 6/i RAID controller. I will be using OMSA to reconfigure a RAID 5 virtual disk as I want to expand the data storage on this disk, however I would like to backup the VD before I go ahead and commit to reconfiguring the disk (the data stored on the VD is critical and I don't want anything to go wrong during the reconfiguration and lose any data).

I have the RAID 5 VD on 4 drives and have filled the other 4 empty bays with identical drives and created a new VD on these new drives. Is there any way that I can use either the BIOS RAID configuration or OMSA to clone everything from the original VD to the new VD, or will I require some third-party software?

What is part number for Dell Perc H710 "VM02C"?

A number of vendors (e.g., on eBay) sell a Perc H710 card they say is a part number VM02C. However, I can't find this in Dell's website, either by looking at every H710 card list in the parts area, or using the site-wide search, or even using Google search with site:dell.com. A chat with one of the vendors indicates they are certain it's a Dell part, and I have no reason to doubt them. I think the part numbers they have are simply from a different type of database or else I'm looking in the wrong place.

Does anyone know what a "VM02C-HIGH P" card corresponds to, in terms of Dell part numbers? Here are the things that I can find that look plausibly like the pictures:

Manufacturer Part# : 2YP62
Dell Part# : 342-3631

Manufacturer Part# : 8PX3M
Dell Part# : 342-4203

Manufacturer Part# : PCVT5
Dell Part# : 342-3536

Thanks for any help,

Mike

P.S. In case it matters, I'm trying to find a card that will work properly in a Dell T420, and was hoping to save some $$ by getting a used card.

Updating Firmware for PERC H310

I have a T620 server with a PERC H310 Adapter and am running VMWare.  I am getting warning that my "firmware version is out of date."  The page in Openmanage says "Latest Available Firmware Version  20.12.0-0004"

Which is the correct download for my system, the "PERC H310 Embedded firmware release 20.12.0-0004", the "PERC H310 Mini Monolithic firmware 20.12.0-0004" or another one?

After I download the correct version, how do I install it?  Use a thumb drive or copy it to my host system and run it from the command line?

Thanks,
Tom

PE2950 SAS controller card (Non-RAID) battery required?

$

I want to remove the RAID controller from PE2950 and install non_RAID  SAS controller. Does this require a different battery than the existing RAID battery? Do I really need the battery at all. I understand battery is required for write caching, but that is not important to me. Also can I use one leg of the two cables currently connecting RAID card to backplane or do I need a different cable. I know where to attach it but have never actually seen the cables yet.

Messed up raid when trying to fix

I have a Poweredge server with a Perc S100 controller with 4 hard drives (not hot swappable) in a RAID 1 configuration.

I had one hard drive that was degraded (drive 2). I disconnected the wrong hard drive (drive 1) and booted with it disconnected and went into the RAID configuration screen and it told me that one drive had failed (the one I disconnected) and of course the other one it said it was degraded like usual. The computer wouldn't boot into windows and I quickly turned it off and reconnected the hard drive.

When I booted and went into raid mode, it now said drive 1 and 2 were degraded. How do I fix this issue? I would like the good hard drive to show that its working and not degraded before I replace the bad hard drive.

It does boot and it does work right now.

I have a powedge T310 server running windows server 2008.

Critical Alerts Indicating "The Perc1 Battery Has Failed"

$

My company has about ten R720s that have reported "Perc1 battery has failed", generally followed by "Perc1 battery is Operating Normally". This is out of a population of about 100 R720s. These are all using the PERC H710 Mini at firmware 21.2.0-0007, A04. Often the Alerts repeat on a 90 day basis, suggesting this is related to TLC.

In most cases the R720s are in production and using our hypervisor, which prevents us from collecting a DSET or the RAID controller log. In the few cases where we have provided a Raid Controller log, Dell support has indicated the battery Full Charge Capacity was too low so they dispatched a new Perc battery.

Generally we can only provide the IDRAC .sel showing the two entries, Perc1 battery failed followed by the Perc1 Battery Operating Normally (file attached). In these cases Dell has not dispatched a battery and suggested that the issue is related to the 90 Battery Learning Cycle.

If the Learning Cycle is supposed to be transparent, why are we getting these alerts?

Are there known Perc battery reporting issues with the FW level I mentioned? We are suspecting this since in one case we replaced the battery and the problem returned a few months later.

Most of the batteries reporting the failure have a 2011 manufacture date. Is this towards the end of their life?

Thanks in advance!

Mark

Using non Dell certified SSD or HDD on Perc H730

Is anyone using non Dell certified drives on the Perc H730 controller?  I'm interested in the T430 server and want to add my own SSDs, probably the Samsung 850 Pro or Intel 730 series drives.  I haven't had a chance to play with the H730 controller yet but I know some of the older controllers throw and alert when using off the shelf SSDs or HDDs that aren't directly from Dell with special firmware.  I saw these alerts on a  older H700 that was in one of my servers.

Please post up any comments if you've tried non Dell drives (either SSD or SATA HDDs) with the H730 and your experience in doing so.

Thank you.  - Jon

r410 backplane - sata compatible with h700?

Hi,

I've bought a Dell PERC H700 to go in a r410 but realise I need to use a backplane to be able to use the 4 x 4TB SATA disks I have with it. Does the Dell SAS backplane (Dell P/N F678M) work ok with SATA hard disks and the H700? I'll also have to buy the connector cable as well of course.

Cheers,

Campbell

Migrate RAID-0 to RAID-1 - how?

$

Hi,
I have a number of R730xd servers with PERC H730 RAID controllers.
I have configured the drives as JBOD by creating a virtual drive for each in RAID 0. So each physical drive has its own virtual RAID-0 drive.
Can I migrate one of them to RAID 1 without losing data? I can delete one of the virtual drives on the same controller so there is a spare drive available.
I found some references to RAID level migration, but no information on how to actually do it.

Replacing a HDD in RAID 1 PowerEdge 2950, question on process

Having never had to do replace a HDD in a RAID 1 configuration on a PowerEdge 2950 server (PERC 5/i).

Do I do it warn or from a cold boot?

I am replacing the failing HDD with the new HDD with the same part number.

It is my boot volume so I really don;t want to screw it up....

Thx

Bad Blocks on Virtual Disk

$

I have a T620 server with a PERC H310 Adapter and am running VMWare.

My virtual disk is reporting it has bad blocks. I ran a Check Consistency task and it completed with a result of "Passed".

Is this an indication that there are no bad blocks on the written portion of my virtual disk?

Can I clear the bad blocks with no data loss?

Thanks,
Tom

New drives on separate backplanes

I have Power Edge 2950 with PERC 5/i and  6x 3.5 inch slots. Three are currently occupied by RAID 5 drives on Connector 0. I added three more drives to create a new larger virtual drive. But Drive 3 (Physical Disk 0:0:3) shows up on Connector 0 (RAID) while the other two drives show up on Connector 1 (RAID) (Physical Disk 0:0:4 and Physical Disk 0:0:5).

Can I get the Physical Disk 0:0:3 on Connector 1 (Backplane) so I can create a new Virtual Disk (RAID 5) with all three new drives?

I am at a loss.

H200 in R710

PowerEdge R415 HDD Setup

Hi!

I have recently bought a Dell PowerEdge R415 with the following Specs:
AMD Opteron 4180 - 2.6 GHz / 6.4GT/s (Six Core)
8 GB ECC DDR3 RAM
AMD SR5670 and SP5100 chipset
Perc H700 Raid controller
iDrac 6 Express & Enterprise
Windows Server 2012 R2
Kingston 128gb SSD

Now here is my problem:

I was originally planning to be using 2x Seagate Barracuda 3TB HDDs in RAID 1 as a storage partition but while windows detects their full size it only makes partition in 2TB on them. I thought Perch H700 would be able to use 3TB drives. Was I wrong? And also on Dells website it says the PowerEdge R415s maximum capacity is 8TB is this true or could you run 4x 3TB Drives in it?

Poweredge R710 6TB HD support

$

Hey I am looking to get a refurbished R710 and was reading up on its specs. Seems it only goes up to supporting a 3TB hard drive configuration? I was looking to place each of my three 6TB hard drives into this machine but it seems it wont be supported?

The os I will be using is Windows Server 2012 R2.

Can anyone shed some light my way on if this would be possible to do with the R710. It would be nice to be able to support at least 30+TB's.

Would purchasing a PCIx SATA adapter card help in any way to reach that amount of storage?

Thanks!

SES R730xd - storage spaces

$

I have been trying to get the "Toggle drive light" option working in the server manager of Server 2012 R2 on my new R730xd. Seems in need SCSI Enclosure Services or SES to enable this.

Is there any way to get this working? It has 16 drives and it would be quite a risk to randomly pull drives (which is what we would have to do should one of the drives fail).

Firmware is up to date

Drivers are up to date.
