Issues with PERC S100 raid controller

Hello all,

Recently I bought a Dell R410 server with a PERC S100 raid controller, without researching before that. Problem is, that I need to install a Linux OS and as it seems, this controller doesn't support linux.

I bought the following cables because I was in a hurry, but they also can't help in my situation:

Apparently, I don't have a slot where to plug the cables.. :)

So my question is. Is there a solution to the problem? I tried disabling/removing the S100, but the MB doesn't detect the hard disks. The server is with a backplane.

I actually found this thread in these forums -> http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/906/t/19472600.aspx, but unfortunately, I could not find the cables posted in the thread.

Here's an actual pic of the machine:

Perc 5i RAID Controller Battery Replacement Question

Hello All,

I have a general question I need help answering: Server is a Dell PowerEdge 1950

I have a E1211 ROMB BATT on the LCD Screen and want to replace the battery. With the specs above showing as our part number based from the Service Tag, would the following link below be ok to order from?

https://www.google.com/shopping/product/11727795338555807657?sclient=psy-ab&q=PERC5I+Serial+Attached+SCSI+battery+TX846&oq=PERC5I+Serial+Attached+SCSI+battery+TX846&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.63808443,d.cWc,pv.xjs.s.en_US.9CjFb4DKbRI.O&biw=1301&bih=678&tch=1&ech=1&psi=uLs5U_SHCNXLsASN7IKYBg.1396292536397.11&ei=1745U8PVI4XIsAT8voCwAQ&ved=0CJMEEKYrMAM

Are there better kinds of batteries this RAID controller could use vs. the one we are planning on ordering?

Please advise.

Thank you,

Server crash when I login

I have r710 sever that has the following symptoms:

I found it crashed with a foreign configuration. I imported the foreign configuration and the server started up. When I try to login the server, it crashes again.

I have noticed that 1 of the 4 drives starts with 2 solid green lights (power and activity-hard drive) while the rest of the drives have only the power light on. After the server is up and running, the other 3 drives have activity on the hard drive (going off and on)  well as the other drive has only the power and no activity. Am suspecting the drive is causing the problem.

The server is configure in raid 5 with 4x500G hard drives (1.5T) - one logic drive. server 2003

Question: Can I just replace the suspect hard drive with a similar drive (dell 500G) without going into the bios? or do I need to do something in the bios for the server to recognize the new drive? Please note: every time I login the con. it crashes.

Array Migration - Server to Server

Hello, I have an R515 with an H700 PERC up and running. Attached is a 4 disk RAID 5 array. I have a new R510 with an H700 PERC now up and running. Both H700's are at the same firmware level. Can I simply power down the R515 and move the disks over to the R510? Is there a documented method for accomplishing this? Thanks, Tim

RAID disk roll back procedure

Hello,

I'm about to do some maintenance on a critical physical server. I'm in the process of writing up a fall back plan and would appreciate a second opinion.

I have 3 disks in my R610 server.

Virtual Disk 0
slot 0 - online
slot 1 - online
slot 2 - ready (dedicated hot spare)

Prior to maintenance I'm planning on unassigning my hot spare (virtual disks within Dell OMSA and choose assign\unassign dedicated hot spare).

I'll then do the following:

1. Power off the server
2. Pull out disk in slot 1 and put to one side (label roll back)
3. Do my server maintenance as needed

If all goes according to plan, power off server put "roll back" disk back in slot 1 and power on. Choose no to import foreign config.

If I need to roll back:

1. Power off server
2. Put "roll back" disk back in slot 1 and choose yes to import foreign config on reboot.

Please advise if this will work\can be improved.

Many thanks

Enable passthrough on H710P

Is it possible to add passthrough on an H710P raid controller? I am looking to build a test VMware vsan system and need to have disk passthrough for vsan to see the SSD drives that are installed.  Any help pointing me to how to configure that would be greatly appreciated.  Hopefully this can be done without flashing the controller to another firmware.

Current firmware version is 21.1.0-0007

Thank you

Swapping to larger drives, but going down two, possible to remove them from array and then expand?

I have a R710 with a PERC 6/i, running Win 2008 R2. I have a small drive for the OS, the the other 5 bays are full with 1 TB drives in a RAID-5 array.

I need to add more storage, so I want to buy three 3TB drives. I plan on removing one old drives and then putting in the new, larger one. I'm assuming it will take 1 of the 3 TB and repair. Leaving 2 TB free on the disk. I will repeat this step two more times, which will result in three 3TB drives with 6 TB of free space not used in the RAID.

Is it possible to have the controller expand storage in my existing RAID-5 array to the free space,  and then remove the two remaining 1TB drives from the array?

Does that make sense? Is this even possible? Or am I going to have to backup the data onto another storage device and remove the array and just start a new one with the three 3TB drives and copy the data back?

Two Partition - 627 GB each

PowerEdge T410 Hot Swap HDD chassis

We purchased a refurbished T410 to use as a spare for a production machine.  We didn't realize that there seems to be two configurations of T410's - one with Hot Swap HDD's, and one without.  The spare we purchased doesn't seem to have the Hot Swap chassis, and I am trying to find out how we can add this.  Is there a part number or way to configure the T410 for Hot Swap HD's?

I cannot seem to find any refurbished T410's with the Hot Swap Chassis - they seem to be in short supply.

Poweredge T300 Where is raid driver?

We have an older Dell Poweredge T300 Service Tag: DTPTX1S

I am trying to do a fresh installation of Windows Server 2003 on it and I cannot load the raid driver. I have tried the Dell PERC 5/E Adapter, PERC 5/i Integrated, PERC 5/i Adapter, PERC 6/E Adapter, PERC 6/i Integrated, CERC 6/i Integrated, PERC 6/i Adapter, PERC 6/i Integrated Blade Win2K3 device driver but installation fails when I try to load it.

I have also tried making a custom disk for this with the same driver using NLite.

Dell T620 only recognizes 4 of 8 installed HDDs

I purchased 7 additional 2TB drives for my Dell PowerEdge T620, which shipped with just 1 such drive almost a year ago now.  My model has the 8 HDD bays in front and after installing the 7 new drives I note that only the four drives in the top row of bays are recognized by the system/BIOS.  I'm running Ubuntu Server 12.04.4 and issuing 'fdisk -l' lists only the four drives, as well (sda,b,c,d).  I'm hoping to set the drives up in a RAID 6 configuration if I can get the system to see eight -- is this just a simple BIOS setting change?  Please tell me I don't need another controller or the like?!  If it helps on the Dell Support side of things, my ST is [removed per privacy policy].  Regards,

Re-flash PERC H700 Firmware from Adapter to Integrated Adapter?

$

Hello, We have several 1Gb H700 Adapter cards (not modular) that we would like to use in our R710’s and were wondering if they can be re-flashed with the “Integrated” adapter firmware? I believe the two cards are identical with the firmware being the only difference, adapters work in any PCIe slot while Integrated Adapters only work in the dedicated Internal Storage PCIe slot. We tried these cards in the R710’s and they get the error: “Invalid PCIe in the Internal storage slot! SYSTEM HALTED” .They work fine when tried in the other PCIe slots but the SAS cables don’t reach. I have tried to flash the cards with the Dell Integrated firmware via DOS boot USB but it can’t find the card in the PCIe slot and I can’t get past the System Halted message when trying the dedicated PCIe slot. Thanks, Glenn

PE1950 R3 PERC6/i - Drive Replaced & Rebuilt but still flashing the 'identify/preparing for removal' pattern?

Hi,

First post - forgive me.

I have a Dell PowerEdge 1950 R3 with the 4x 2.5" SAS/SATA backplane connected to a PERC 6/i. 4x 1TB SATA WD Red drives are fitted configured in a RAID10, and all have been merrily working for 6 months. A drive failed, so we popped it out, and popped in a new one. Rebuild started automatically, and completed in 208 minutes.

All is now well again, except the drive identify / preparing for removal light pattern still flashes on the replaced drive. Array health is reported as optimal, all drives are online, and there's nothing untoward in the PERC logs.

Is this simply a firmware error that may go away on the next reboot? (We can't reboot this machine right now ... don't ask!) but it's making me nervous even though everything is working fine and the logs report a successful rebuild and optimal status.

Thanks for any insights you may be able to give!

SAS 6/iR Integrated SAS + SATA (SSD) Negotiated speed PE1950

$

Hello,

I've installed on my PE1950 III two drives in SAS 6/iR Integrated (embedded).

First one is SAS 73GB 15k which uses 3Gbps and second one is Samsung 840 EVO 250GB (ssd). I know, that these SSD's are not supported by Dell, however it works fine, just one problem: I am having Negotiated speed 1.50Gbps which should be 3Gbps (Maximum read rate I am getting from tests is ~150MB/s, this SSD supports up to 500MB/s).

I did not install interposer on SATA disk, while mixing it with SAS hdd on the controller. Could interposer solve the problem and let me use whole 3Gbps of the channel? I have unused interposers at home, but asking, if it is worth going to the datacenter and placing one on the SATA.

Thanks in advance!

Failed and degraded virtual disks on Dell T110 II RAID 1 PERC S300

We have a Dell T110 II server, factory installed with Microsoft Windows Server 2012, Standard x64 Edition, running PERC S300 RAID Controller (1068E HBA).

It came installed with RAID 1 on the 500GB operating system disk. We've since added another 1TB data disk

OMSA is reporting both a virtual disk failure and a degraded disk (see screen shots).

So my questions are:

  • Should I be replacing the physical disks? If so, which one(s) is(are) at fault?
  • How can I fix the virtual disk failure / degraded issues?

In anticipation of a few questions, I know an S300 isn't a great RAID solution (nothing I can do about that right now), and I have several full backups!

Dell PowerEdge 840

I just purchased a used Dell PowerEdge 840 and would like to install Windows 2008 on it.   It has VMware ESXi on it.   How can I install Windows 2008 over and replace the Vmware O/S?   It does not look like this server has a Perc Controller that I can see.   It looks like the drives are setup as Direct Attach SAS storage.

PE T110 Power Issue

I am expanding the capacity of my Dell PowerEdge T110 Server.  I have an extra Network car din the server and an S100 PERC Controller.  Nothing else extra.  I started with 2 250GB HDDs in RAID 1 Config.  I added a 3rd HDD (1 TB) for a new RAID 1 Virtual Disk.  I got it all set up and then I slapped in the 2dn HDD (4th in the chassis overall) and now the Server will not start.  It blinks on briefly and dies... blinks on briefly and dies.  I can unplug any one of the HDDs from power and it will boot fine and work.  Does this sound like the 4th HDD is drawing too much power?  Power Supply not up to snuff?

Thoughts? Anybody scene this?

PE T110 RAID Expansion Issue

I have a PowerEdge T110.  I have two disks configured for RAID 1.  I have swapped out both old 250 GB Disks with 1 TB Disks.  I am unable to figure out how I grow the Virtual Disk to make use of the expanded capacity.  The physical disks show the available space but I am not finding where to expand the virtual?  I have read the documents and it makes reference to OCE (Online Capacity Expansion).  I don't see this tool anywhere. Am I missing software/version etc.

T110 OS - WIndows 2008R2 (pretty up to date on patches)

PERC S100 - Driver 1.0.1-0021  StarPort Driver Version - 6.1.7.601/17514

Dell Open Manage Server Administrator - 6.4.0

I have looked in the RAID Management console during boot (Ctrl-R) and in OMSA... nothing to increase the size.

Any support or guidance would be appreciated.

PowerEdge T110 II - Add 2nd hard drive for mirroring

$

Hi, this is probably an easy question, but I haven't seen anything on it...

I have a PowerEdge T110 II with a single hard drive. Obviously it's not set up for mirroring or RAID or anything. However, I purchased a 2nd drive identical to the first and I want to install it and set up mirroring.

I'm currently running the free version of VMWare ESXi on this server with about 8 VMs (only 2 running though.) I'm assuming that I can add the 2nd drive, enable Mirroring in the BIOS and it'll do its thing.... When the mirroring is ready I'll be able to restart VMWare. But I'm thinking there's more to it than that.

Any pitfalls I should be aware of? Suggestions? Best practices?

Many thanks!
