Hi, I have a PowerEdge 1900 server with Perc 5i RAID5 controller that will not boot. I am a novice so please excuse me if I do not use the correct terminology.
The server is in a different room from the lab. Last Monday morning, a student was trying to back up images to the server and could not connect. I checked other PCs and the connection was gone from all. I went to the server and it was off. I started it again, got the Dell Poweredge 1900 screen, then it went through what I think is called the BIOS, with white letters on the black screen saying the usual things like amount of memory, the logical devices installed, etc. It went through that usual procedure and got to the Windows Server 2003 screen, got the progress bar for a few seconds, then instead of loading, it went back to the Dell Poweredge 1900 screen, began the BIOS stage again, and keeps doing that over and over.
I pressed F8 and tried to load in Safe Mode. It does not boot, just goes back to the Dell Poweredge screen and starts the cycle again. I pressed F8 again and chose Last Known Good Configuration, still will not boot.
I pressed F11, put the Server 2003 Disk 1 in the CD drive, selected Boot from CD, I get the Windows Setup screen, it says it is loading what it needs. I get to Recovery and ask to Repair OS, and it tells me that is cannot find the hard drive, and I have to exit.
I pressed F10 and ran a full diagnostic. The 4 physical HD's were all tested and passed, no issues. The only errors were related to Low Battery on the Storage ROMB battery (error codes 2900:0221 and 2900:0325). No other errors. I ordered a replacement battery, received it, replaced it on the RAID controller, turned everything on and it still did not boot, just went through the endless cycle again. I figured the RAID controller battery needed to charge for a day, so I went into F2 to keep the server from going through the continuous cycle so the battery could charge.
This morning I restarted again and still the same cycle. I ran a new complete diagnostic and the only error was 2900:0221, IPML system Event log check, referencing the failed battery. From what I have read, that is a notice from the failure and will stay in the log until I can clear it (which I cannot do because it will not boot).
In the mean time, I have been reading various posts in this forum to try to learn what is happening. I learned to check the RAID configuration in case a physical drive was wrong. I started the system again and Control R to run the RAID config utility. The 4 physical drives are all listed as online, but the available space is 0 MB.
Does available Space = 0 mean the HD is completely filled? That I assume would prevent the OS from loading?
If that is correct, can someone tell me how I might be able to delete files from the HD when the OS will not boot, and booting from disk does not work because it cannot find the HD (because it is full?)?
If you think that the problem is something else, I am happy to hear suggestions. I am at a loss how to proceed.
Thank you for your kind assistance.
