PE 2900, PERC 5/i, 4 Disks, Raid 5, Drive 0:0:1 Failed and Can't Get It Online

I was having a strange problem with the sever 2003 Standard.  Occasionally, when a programs saves a data to SQL, the data is not there and had to retype in.  Looking at the events, it showed the battery error on the PERC 5/i Integrated.

I ordered and replaced the battery and the error is gone, but that's when I noticed the drive 0:0:1 was not flashing green as the other 3 drives.  From the controller BIOS, 3 drives showed "Online" but this one showed "Foreign Configuration" and won't let me do anything.  So, thinking the drive is bad, I removed it and bought another identical used drive then replaced.  But the OMSA showed same "Foreign Configuration".  After googling, learned to clear it, and now it shows "Ready" state.

Is this normal?  Prior to replacement drive, the capacity showed sum of 3 drives and had remaining space of 29GB.  After replacing the drive, it still shows 29GB free.  One of the instruction from a forum suggested setting the drive to "Hot Spare", so I did, and the drive is still on "Ready" state and not "Online" as in other 3 drives.

So, with Raid 5, is one drive always used as Hot Spare?  Can I get a capacity to the sum of all 4 drives?  Is the "Ready" state what it supposed to be instead of "Online"?

Please help.

How to reconstruct/migrate a VD with LSI Megaraid SAS 9260-8 in a Poweredge C6100?

Hello,

I'm trying to add a new disk in a virtual drive. It seems the MegaRaid Storage Manager GUI doesn't offer this option and I need to use the StorCli command line tool. I'm having a hard time finding the right command.

As per LSI StorCli reference manual, I should use : storcli /cx/vx start migrate <type=raidlevel> [option=<add|remove> disk=<e1/s1,e2/s2 ...> ]
With the following example from the manual: storcli /c0/v3 start migrate type=r5 option=add disk=e5:s2,e5:s3

 I first list my drives:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MegaRAID Storage Manager>storcli /c0 /eall /sall show
Controller = 0
Status = Success
Description = Show Drive Information Succeeded.

PowerEdge 840 making Raid 1

$

I have a PE 840 which was not setup as a RAID when I purchased it. I have loaded Windows Server 2008 on the HD including three days of updates anticipating that I would be able to add a second HD and create a RAID 1. So I went to give a go today and the SAS 5/ir configuration software tells me that is will delete all my data on the primary drive.

I'm hoping that it is not true, but then again this is the first RAID system I have setup.

Any guidance?

Dell Poweredge T320 took a power bump...system taking a long time to come back up...

We working on my server, took a power bump...system crashed.

When restarting after power came back, the server is taking a VERY long time to come back up.

The system is running RHEL 6.5.  It has the PERC 310 RAID controller.  Root is setup a a RAID 5 with 3 disks in the raid group.

How long is it typical while it is checking/rebuilding the RAID array before the kernel can bring the system back up?

Does this repair operation have to be done using the CTRL-M raid setup menus or is it done automatically by the raid hardware silently under the OS?

Can't install Windows 2008 R2 on Dell R210

Dear Dell Community,

I am struggling like I have never before with a Windows Installation.. I am reconditioning a couple of old R210 with SAS 6/iR adapters and have tried everything in the book but I can't install the OS..

Windows boots but fail to find the drivers, I have downloaded all the drivers related to SAS 6i/R all over the internet but none of them seem to work so I can install the OS..

I later on decided to just take out the Raid controller and use regular SATA Onboard controller but even that fails to find native drivers and I really don't have Idea what kind of drivers would you need to install the SATA onboard controller on this R210 Server.. All in all a very daunting task that is driving me off the walls.

Funny thing is that I was able to install VMWARE ESXi 5.5 on it, without even blinking.. now I still need to have Windows on this Machine and not VMWARE, since the purpose is for Backup Server not Hypervisor.

Please point me to the right link or driver so I can accomplish this task.. I would be happy to install either Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 2012 R2.

SAS 6/iR "Create virtual disk failed"

Hi,

We have a PE 2950 with SAS 6/iR integrated.

We have a configured virtual disk of 2 73GB HDDs as RAID1. We bought two new Seagate Savvio 10K.6 ST900MM0006 900GB 10K 6Gbps 2.5" HDDs.

I have tried to configure a virtual disk of these 2 new HDDs and at the end I receive "Create virtual disk failed". Neither RAID0 or RAID1 is to be created. For creation I use OpenManage Server Administrator  V7.1.0.

What can be the cause of this problem?

Disk Medium Error Detected - PE T320 / S110

My server began logging an error last night: ID 2416 Disk Medium Error Detected Physical Disk 0:1:4 Controller 0 Connector 0 This was preceded by Event ID 129 that referenced "bcraid3". This was logged thousands of times before I rebooted server and it ceased. I have no physical disk at 0:1:4. I have a RAID 5 with (3) HDDs and (1) Hot Spare. These are numbered 0:1:0 through 0:1:3. All drives and controller show status OK in OMSA. All show green lights. Should I be worried about my RAID being possibly unhealthy? I'm still under warranty. Any help would be appreciated. As an aside this began happening during nightly backup via RD1000 which was successful.

!!!PowerEdge 1750 Raid0 2HDD Help Needed!!!

We have a RAID0 with two drives, 0:0 & 0:1.  Drive 0:1 failed.  The light on the drive is blinking red, and array manager indicates it is in a failed state.  We replaced drive 0:1 with a new drive.  This server supports hot-plug drives, so we pulled the failed drive while the server was running, and the inserted the new drive.  The new drive blinked green temporarily, and then turned red.  We checked the status of the drive in both Array Manager and the SAS Bios, and see the status of the drive as failed.  We were under the impression that this drive is hot swappable, and should automatically rebuild.

Can someone please advise how to check if automatic rebuild is enabled and/or how to manually rebuild.  Important!  We cannot do anything that will risk losing data on the existing drive in the array (0:0).

Thank You in advance for helping us out!!!

how to do hardware raid on dell r720 server

hi

I have one r720 fully populated with HDD, I have two logical drives 0 and 1, the first logical drive ( 6 units of 500GB HDD) is configured with raid 0 and contains data, the second logical drive has only 2 units of 500GB with raid 1 configured on it and also its hosting the operating system. My client populated the 6 units with the data first and the last two with the operating system as the last HDD. During boot operation I have the following error 1. No boot device available 2. Current boot mode is set to bios 3. Please ensure compatible bootable media is available 4. Use the system setup program to change the boot mode as needed.

I tried using the system setup program to change the boot mode at the bios by pressing f2 function key. I have two options on boot mode ie the bios and the UEFI. When I change to UEFI I was redirected to boot from NIC or DVD rom, when I change back to bios I have the same error above, how will I change the settings such that my server will not look for the boot sector from the first two hard drives or rather  how do I redirect it to boot from the last two HDD having my operating system. My fear is losing data on those first logical drive.

Hi,

I'm using a Poweredge R720 with a PERC H710p RAID and 16 SAS disks.

Once every few months, I get battery warnings which seem to automatically clear as indicated by the pic:

Tue, 08 Apr 2014 21:16:34The charge level for the battery on Integrated RAID Controller 1 is below the normal threshold.
Tue, 08 Apr 2014 21:02:27Write policy on Integrated RAID Controller 1 was changed to Write Through.

The server runs fine, not too sure why this is happening, but I suspect I should replace the battery.

OMSA 2350 and 2095 Disk error on PE 1950's

$

We have two domain controllers in our remote office running on PE1950's that are out of warranty sometime ago.  Before my time.  Recently both systems had a expected drive failure reported by OMSA.  The setup is two drives in Virtual Pool 0 and our a Raid1 set.  I replaced the  drive in each system showing expected failure and it showed it rebuilt properly and no other issue.  A day later on both servers I started getting 2350 error and 2095 error in the ESM log and in the System log.

The 2095 event is informational as a SCSI sense error where the SCSI device expereinced an error but may have recovered.

The 2350 error is there was an unrecoverable disk media error during the rebuild and indicates replace the drive.

The interesting thing is both drives, 0 and 1, are reporting the issue on both servers.

Thinking it may be a driver issue this is what I have.

On SRV1 both drives have a D1S4 revision while on SRV2 drive 0 has DS54 and Drive 1 has a FS64 revision.

Going further I had another server in another location have the same issue, same configuration, drive replaced and is not showing any of these errors.

As these are out of warranty running a DSET would be useless.

Suggestions and remember these are Domain Controllers.

Dell RAID1 Pred Fail Yes

Hi!

I have a server with RAID 1 configured that was running too slow.. some applications does not even run.

I entered SAS Config. Utility and I checked that RAID 1 was in status 'not synced', but I was able to sync it.

Today, both disks have already the same space, but the secondary drive has Pred Fail Status = Yes, and computer still remains in the same status..

I tried to run 'Dell Diagnostic Tool' but I can't install the downloaded exe file, I double click and nothing happens..

I tried to run OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) (already installed before), but also none window opens..

I tried also run Dell SAS Raid Storage Manager (already installed), window opens, but no server is displayed

I want to bring the second drive offline in order to remove and replace it..

I wonder if I just can remove the drive physically without bring it offline previously without that causing problems..

I'm also getting a strange error 'Event Notification Application' » 'Unable to register with Framework, program will now exit' » I already tried re install framework (4.5) but computer freezes and nothing happens..

Glad for any help on this.

PE 1900 w/PERC 5i RAID controller will not boot, I think because HD is full? Please help

Hi, I have a PowerEdge 1900 server with Perc 5i RAID5 controller that will not boot.  I am a novice so please excuse me if I do not use the correct terminology.

The server is in a different room from the lab.  Last Monday morning, a student was trying to back up images to the server and could not connect.  I checked other PCs and the connection was gone from all.  I went to the server and it was off.  I started it again, got the Dell Poweredge 1900 screen, then it went through what I think is called the BIOS, with white letters on the black screen saying the usual things like amount of memory, the logical devices installed, etc.  It went through that usual procedure and got to the Windows Server 2003 screen, got the progress bar for a few seconds, then instead of loading, it went back to the Dell Poweredge 1900 screen, began the BIOS stage again, and keeps doing that over and over.

I pressed F8 and tried to load in Safe Mode.  It does not boot, just goes back to the Dell Poweredge screen and starts the cycle again.  I pressed F8 again and chose Last Known Good Configuration, still will not boot.

I pressed F11, put the Server 2003 Disk 1 in the CD drive, selected Boot from CD, I get the Windows Setup screen, it says it is loading what it needs.  I get to Recovery and ask to Repair OS, and it tells me that is cannot find the hard drive, and I have to exit.

I pressed F10 and ran a full diagnostic.  The 4 physical HD's were all tested and passed, no issues.  The only errors were related to Low Battery on the Storage ROMB battery (error codes 2900:0221 and 2900:0325).  No other errors.  I ordered a replacement battery, received it, replaced it on the RAID controller, turned everything on and it still did not boot, just went through the endless cycle again.  I figured the RAID controller battery needed to charge for a day, so I went into F2 to keep the server from going through the continuous cycle so the battery could charge.

This morning I restarted again and still the same cycle.  I ran a new complete diagnostic and the only error was 2900:0221, IPML system Event log check, referencing the failed battery.  From what I have read, that is a notice from the failure and will stay in the log until I can clear it (which I cannot do because it will not boot).

In the mean time, I have been reading various posts in this forum to try to learn what is happening.  I learned to check the RAID configuration in case a physical drive was wrong.  I started the system again and Control R to run the RAID config utility.  The 4 physical drives are all listed as online, but the available space is 0 MB.

Does available Space = 0 mean the HD is completely filled?  That I assume would prevent the OS from loading?

If that is correct, can someone tell me how I might be able to delete files from the HD when the OS will not boot, and booting from disk does not work because it cannot find the HD (because it is full?)?

If you think that the problem is something else, I am happy to hear suggestions.  I am at a loss how to proceed.

Thank you for your kind assistance.
