Additional Disk on System

Hi,

I just installed Windows 2008 on my Dell Poweredge R310 using one Hard disk only that I've configured through RAID management. Now after installation, I want to add another physical hard disk to serve as additional drive on my windows OS to serve as a simple storage for any files (Drive D:).

Do I need to go through Raid Configuration again?

what will I choose, Import Foreign or Clear configuration at the promp?

I am afraid maybe I will lose the data on my previous disk and Install the OS again from the start.

If anyone can suggest steps to do this I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

I have an R310 with a SAS 6/IR controller. Can the raid controller recognize 4 TB drives?

Can I use them in a RAID 5 for 12 TB of space?

Can I use them in a RAID 10 for 8 TB of space?

Hi All,

I have a an older PowerEdge 1950. it has a PERC5I controller and 3 36G SAS drives. One of the drives is blinking yellow and needs to be replaced. This is an older server that i adopted from the previous admin. It has Redhat Linux installed. With this controller are these drives hot swappable? Can I just purchase a new drive and switch it out for it to rebuild?

Hi

I have posted to the forums about this before without it being resolved. I still have a problem with the storage controller PERC H700 in a R410 in that I am unable to update its firmware via windows server 2012 R2. When I run the package associated with this service tag it gives me the error depicted in the attached picture.

I monitor this hyper-v host with nagios and need omsa to function properly. This is urgent now. An yes i downloaded the correct version for Windows x64. OMSa simply reports "Storage Error! No controllers found."

SAS 6/iR Integrated Rebuilds VD on restart - Negotiated Vs. Capable

I have a PE 2900 with a SAS 6/iR Integrated card.

I got 2 new Toshiba DT01ACA200 2TB drives.  Built the RAID-1 array and the VD fine.

It booted up and was slow as [Admin Note:  profanity removed per TOU].  I opened OMSA and it stated the VD was degraded and rebuilt the 2nd drive fine.  I didn't think anything of it cause I assumed it was part of the creation process.

There was a power outage last weekend and it booted up and stated it was degraded again.  I attributed that to the power outage.  It rebuilt fine. Same physical drive rebuilt

Then Sunday morning I installed updates on the OS and restarted.  When it can up it was Degraded again and rebuilt. Same physical drive rebuilt again.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this or have any ideas on something for me to try?  I contacted Dell and they told me to see if there was a firmware update for the drives.  I've emailed Toshiba about that.

Also it states the drives are Negotiated Speed of 1.5 GBps but Capable Speed is 3.00 GBps. Any idea how to get the fully capable speeds?

PowerEdge R720 iDRAC refuses to use default gateway

We have some new PowerEdge R720 servers and are trying to set up the iDRAC on our management network. Our management network is internal; 172.30.0.0/16 with a default gateway at 172.30.0.1.

When we configure the iDRAC's IP, the router can ping it, but our management stations outside that subnet cannot. We can ping other, older iDRACs on the same subnet just fine but not the new servers, so we know it's not our network.

We run management on tagged VLAN 2 and the server's actual traffic untagged. When we watched network activity from the router, we noticed the iDRAC wasn't even bothering to do an ARP for the default gateway, even though it was receiving the ping packets from the management station.

Any ideas? This is the same configuration we've been using for years and it's always worked until these new servers!

Can't find PERC 5/i firmware for PE2950

I need to update PERC 5/i firmware on a 2950, but when I go to support.dell.com and browse to the 2950s, the only SAS RAID firrmware updates I see are for PERC 5/E, PERC 6/i ,or PERC 6/iR.  I see a Win2008 driver for the 5/i, but I'm running VMware on this server.  What am I missing here?

Will a poweredge 1950 support a SATA drive?

I have a power edge 1950 rack mount, 1U.   It takes SAS drives, but I have to find a drive that is a SAS, with a 4096 sector size, or 512e or advanced format.  I can't find any, but I can find SATA drives like this.

Does this server support sata drives, if yes, is it the same connectors?

PERC H710 and Windows Server 2008 r2 Write Caching policy

$

Dell T320 with PERC H710 controller. One set of SAS drives and one set of SATA drives. Drives are very noisy. When I check 'Disk Drives' in 'Device manager', I notice the "Enable write caching on the device" is unchecked. When checked, the drives become silent immediately. But after a reboot, the checks are gone. I.e. Write Caching is disabled and the drives are again very noisy.

How do I make "Enable write caching on the device" sticky?

PERC Learn Cycle & WUG alerts

We have several Dell PowerEdge RAID Controller cards ranging from h700, 5 & 6. The problem is that every 90 days the Learn Cycle initiates & the WhatsUp Gold then flags the server as being down.

Is there any way I can resolve this issue? Possibly disabling the learning cycle & running it manually or setting the cycle to run at a specific time/day.

Thanks

Dell Power Edge1850 RAID Alert Emails.

Hi guys,

I am in the process of setting up some form of monitoring on our Dell servers.

We have some older Dell PowerEdge 1850 systems that although I have been able to set up alert emails for the PSUs, CPU, RAM etc, I can't seem to find a way to set up these emails for RAID warnings/failures.

Does anyone know how to configure this?

On my newer Dell servers the RAID alert setup comes up right under the other alerts, but on my PowerEdge 1850 I don't see them.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Cheers, John.

Hi, If I have the PERC H700 (not modular, but integrated or adapter) with 512 MB cache, is it possible to upgrade that to 1 GB, or would I need a new adapter? Will the H700 recognize it, does it need a firmware upgrade, etc.? Thanks in advance.

Please kindly advice.

How to disable built-in PERC S300 Controller and Connect HDDs directly to On-Board SATA

$

Hello

I bought new servers two of them came with PERC S300 controllers. When I tried to install Linux (CentOS) on it, the system couldn't see the RAID!

After some researches , I noticed that it is Windows specific (fake RAID)

I want to disable this controller and connect my HDDs directly to the main board SATA connectors, and implement a software RAID solution under Linux.

What I need is :

What cables do I have to order for that purpose?

Thanks

Failed Virtual Disk PERC S100

Hi,

ave a DELL Poweredge T110 ii with a S100 embedded controller and I just replaced a failed disk. Its a simple mirrored pair and when I assigned the new disk as a Global Spare the rebuilding starts. There is also 2 Virtual Disks on these disks and virtual disk 1 recovers with a state of ready but virtual disk 2 has a state of failed.

Both physical disks are Online. Following warnings in OMSA;

Anyone got any ideas why this would happen and how to fix?

Thanks,

John

PE R810: Upgrading RAID controller from PERC H200 to PERC H700

$

Our R810 (W2008 R2) has an H200 controller with four SAS disks configured into two RAID 1 volumes. We have seen some poor performances due to I/O and want to upgrade to an H700 to make use of the battery-backed cache. However, we can't work out how to install the driver for the new controller because the system drive is one of the two volumes. The controller needs to be fitted to install the driver but it won't boot into Windows without the driver installed. I'm sure there's something obvious I'm missing but it's new territory for me, having been used to a completely different hardware and OS.

Thanks.
