I have a Dell 2950 server with perc 5i raid 1 . 2 physical drives, 1 virtual drive. I have 6 empty hotslots left.

Can I install 2 larger drives and configure to another virtual drive using raid 1 also. And then clone the smaller virtual drive to the larger virtual drive and then disable the smaller drives and remove leaving the large drives as the upgrade to boot up on?

Thanks for any answers and help.

Hi,

We are using R710 Dell server with Honeywell application.

Five slots from 0-4. We found hard disk slot-1 faulty.I removed the hardisk and rebooted the system and found automaically the hotspare hard disk instlled in the 4th slot came into working ans system is working fine. I sent the faulty hard disk and received the new from Dell. Now i want to put this as Hot spare in the server itself.

Should i configure anything in the Configuration utiltiy ?I couldn't find anymenu to configure the new hard disk as hotpsare.I found only Manage harddisk where I could n't fnd anything.Pls find the below is the conffigration I put the new harddisk in the physical slot 1 and rebooted the system. But still the hard disk is not being recognized.NO Led is blinking.

m620 with h310 mini redhat 6.5 trim support for ssd?

I've tried configuring the ssd disks in raid mode and in non-raid mode and accessing them directly. Intel DC 3500 drives that support trim - but no luck.

I'm wondering if the h310 mini is not passing through the trim command, even in non-raid mode.

Anyone know?  If not, is there another card that does?

Power Edge R420 with WS2008 R2 PERC S110

Hi, We have systems here running WS2008 R2 with Raid 1 using PERC S110. I'm new to servers and need to know how I can enable something on the 'tray' in terms of health of disks and the RAID system? Is there a tool that I can enable or play with that the future customer can use to get 'alerts' if the disks degrade , ie an email or some sort of notification....How does this work...

Thanks a lot

RAID Controller for C1100

Hello all,

I have a Dell Poweredge ("CloudEdge") C1100 server for home lab use.  I mistakenly bought a PERC 5/i controller to do a RAID10 array of 4x 3TB SATA drives.  It works, but the drives only show up as 2TB due to the PERC 5/i limitations.

I *believe* I need to get the Dell PERC H700 controller to support 3TB SATA drives, and I believe I've found a used one at a decent price.  My worry is if it will physically fit in the server, as the current 5/i is a very snug fit.

Does anyone know if the Dell PERC H700 0K883J will work in my C1100?

Thanks for any information.  I have been unable to find any type of Dell documentation that specifically lists the part number compatibility.

Non-Raid Disk - Create a new VD without data loss

Hi,

I have 1 VD configured as a RAID 1 and all is working well. I recently became low on space at a critical time, so for speed I installed a new 500GB hard drive and created a partition and moved data to this.

If I install a 2nd 500Gb hard drive now, can I create a second VD as a RAID 1 without losing the data that is currently stored on the non-raid drive that was installed?

Details of the drives are below;

Thanks,

Is it possible to install a SSD hard drive into an existing poweredge 2950.

The system currently has 4 x 146gig hard drives and we want to install a single SSD drive to try to increase performance of the SQL temp database..

We want to keep the current SAS hard drives.

I'm trying to do a RAID driver update on M610s, the thing is that I've found only Linux and Windows software for this but I'm running an ESXi on the blade.

Did anybody to this update using in ISO image or anything else without reinstallin the OS on the blad?

Cables for a PERC H700i in R415 Server

$

Hello, I have a Dell R415 server with the SAS 6iR storage controller. There is no backplane - the four drives are connected directly.

I want to upgrade this server with an H700i controller in order to support 4TB hard drives, and it appears the existing cables will likely need to be replaced in order to reach the connectors on the H700. The current cable connects to the PCIe riser card, but the H700 has the SAS connectors located on the card itself. See photo of current setup here. I'm assuming the H700 will need to use the onboard connectors instead of the connector on the riser card.

What is the correct breakout/fan cable for this setup? There doesn't seem to be clear information on this on the Dell site. Looks like it needs to connect into a (proprietary? marked with "P3A") 6-pin power supply connector for the SATA power, a mini-SAS on the controller card, and then combined power+SATA connectors directly on the drives.

Thank you!

Setup RAID 0 for single disk when current RAID array exists

All,

I am trying to expand storage for a PowerEdge 9250 which is running out of space.

The current machine is setup as a RAID 0 with two 128GB SAS drives.

What I'm trying to do is add a third disk as an individual/stand-alone drive and I read that this can be done by adding an individual drive as a RAID 0.

  But I am stuck.

I have added the OpenManage software and I can see the disk, make it blink, etc.

But I cannot see where to build the RAID 0 for the newly inserted disk.  Is this done via the RAID tool from boot?

Any advice on this would be tremendously helpful.

Thanks,
JBH

Dell PowerEdge T310 run on dedraded mode

I have a Dell PowerEdge T310 server with four disks say D0, D1, D2 & D3 inside the server and D0 & D1 are found not working.
Assuming I have RAID 5 or 10 configured (I need to check it out);
Will the server boot in a degraded mode when I take out those two faulty disks while I wait for replacement disks?
Will I be able to rebuild the RAID levels back if those two faulty disks are replaced without any data lose?

I have Windows Small Business Server 2010 (Windows 2008 r2, Exchange, SharePoint)

New HDDs not detected in PowerEdge R710

Hello.

The PowerEdge R710 server originally had 3 SAS-2 drives installed and running Windows Server OS. To reuse the server for something else, we wiped the server (deleted the OS and data) and also deleted the RAID virtual drive to start clean. I added 5 more hard drives (same size and model number as original 3 working drives) to the server, giving the server 8 drives. When I power on the server, all drives have light activity but after a few seconds the original 3 drives are the only drives to have a steady green light (with an occasional blink). The other drives' leds are blank. Going into the "raid bios" CTRL+R to create a new RAID array, only the original 3 hdds are available for selection.

I've added the drives, I can see light activity for a few seconds at boot so I assume the drives are connected to the two SAS controllers. Where do I go from here?

Thoughts?

How to install a H700 on a R410 with hot swap? Pics included

We're pretty new to RAID in general - and we have a R410 with a SAS 6/iR card in its storage slot - and a H700 hooked up in the PCI expansion slot. The problem is, we can only get 2 of the HDDS to recognize because we're not sure how to hook up the wires.

The H700 has 2 cables that can hook up from the back. The backplane of the hotswap device has 2 slots as well - however the riser it seems needs to be plugged in. You have the riser SAS cable plugged into the right most hotswap SAS port - and the hotswaps left port is plugged into port A of the H700.

If we plug both cables from the SAS card to the hotswap - we get an error about the riser and non detection, a fatal error of sorts. We figure its something silly we're missing or a cable we're missing - but we cant seem to find a concrete install guide and dell tech support is min $150.

Any help is appreciated!

2nd Raid Card for PowerEdge 2900 II

$

I have recently purchased a used PowerEdge 2900 II with the following configuration: Dual Xeon Quad Core 2.33GHz processors, 24GB Ram (12x2GB modules), PERC 5I Raid Controller, Dual Power Supplies, etc. I would like to repurpose this server for my home office mainly because of its scalability and reliability. My applications are not CPU intensive. I hope the system is compatible with Solaris and Oracle VM VirtualBox. Main purpose is for it to be a workstation on multiple OS for training purposes and also to be used as a NAS. The plan is to add two ToughArmor MB994SP-4SB-1 4x2.5" SATA HDD Hot Swap Mobile Racks to utilize the two idle 5.25" device bays. Ideally, these would host 8xSSD drives for startup and main applications. I plan to use Raid 0 with all 8x512GB ADATA 2.5" and all 8 2TB WD RED 3.5" SATA HDDs. The hard drives are all rated beyond 1,000,000 MTBF. I plan to add a second RAID card (this is going to be a PERC 6i Raid controller) to connect the 2.5" drives. This card is placed instead of the PERC 5i to allow startups and the PERC 5I card will be moved to one of the other PCIe slots to connect to the 8 2TB WD RED 3.5" SATA HDDs, supporting NAS. These are the questions I will much appreciate your opinion on them: a) Please let me know if this is a "bad" idea, I am not very savvy with hardware b) Is PERC 6i the best option I have on this configuration and what does it have to offer (i.e. data transfer rate) when compared to PERC 5i c) Is it possible to utilize WD 2TD RED 3.5" NAS drives without interposer and without problems on this configuration. d) Is it possible to utilize ADATA SX900 or SP920 drives in the 2.5" racks connected to the PERC6I as startup RAID 0 drive arrays (x2). Thank you,

Consistency Check sometimes finds inconsistencies - Raid 1+0

$

We regularly find that a Raid Consistency Check on our new T420 server array finds a small number of inconsistencies.  This is a 4-disk Raid 1+0 array.  Any idea what might be causing this?

This Perc 310 Raid controller card and cables have been replaced but still using the original backplane and three of the disks.  One of the disks is new because it was replaced when it failed suddenly without warning.

It has been suggested that this is caused by 'corrupted parity in the Raid header' but don't understand how that can be when there is no parity involved in a Raid 1+0 array!

Have exported and checked the LSI log and note errors:
I2C 1 cannot find idle bus!
Spurious interrupt received in task mode

Any suggestions what is causing this?

SATA drives not recognized

Internal RD1000 and TS-H493 CD-RW/DVD are not recognized in Device Manager or Disk Management on PE 2900 after clean install of Windows Server 2008 R2 x64. Both were working normally while previously running Server 2003 x86. BIOS is current at 2.7.0. Both drives are connected directly to motherboard SATA connectors using existing SATA cables. Independently, all SAS HDD's are working normally in RAID arrays via PERC SAS 6/iR controller. RD1000 and TS-H493 firmware were up to date prior to conversion to Server 2008. All Intel motherboard chipset drivers are reported as current in Device Manager; no problem devices listed in Device Manager.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Raid Failure on 1900

Hi all,

I recently started supporting a business systems. There's a Dell 1900 server with 6 SATA disks as RAID disks that  fail to boot. The server used for an internal data entry system and important data on it so I cant just rebuilt the Raid  also no tech guy in the business to ask about previous settings. First all disks were on Foreign state:

And no VD:

And as you can see there's no Foreign Mgmt tab!

Also Ctrl Mgmt tab was like this:

After getting more info from topics here, I've tried to Import Foreign Config. First attempt was successful. After that I got 2 Disk Groups, each one has 6 disks in config (6+6=12) but I only have 6 disks!

For each I just have one disk and all other 5 are missing

Disk 00:00 for Disk Group 1 and Disk 00:02 for Disk Group 0

Also my PD Mgmt tab is like this:

ON Ctrl Mgmt, I tried both Online disks (00 and 02) to boot from, but to no avail!

Next attempts to Import Foreign config was failed and now my startup screen is like this:

Do you think that there was an error in importing foreign config and because I have 2 VDs on a small server and each with 6 disks? Cause I don’t think that a small server needs to have 2 VDs. Or it’s OK and I should have 2 VDs if import config made 2 VDs for server?

If not is there any way to merge both VDs and have 1 VD on VD 0 and try to fix the other disks?

Thanks all!

Poweredge T20, PERC H310 and OM 7.4 - "No Storage Controllers detected"

$

I've recently bought a new Poweredge T20 server and PERC H310 card, onto which I've connected 3 WD Red SATA Drives. This was originally configured as a 2-disk RAID 0 set, but now that the 3rd drive has arrived I want to convert the array to RAID 5

The problem is that while everything is recognized in the PERC BIOS, this does not allow you to change a RAID array without destroying and recreating it. So I installed OpenManage 7.4 under Windows Server 2012 R2 and the latest driver and firmware (20.12.0-004) for the PERC but OM doesn't see the RAID controller in the Storage section - but it IS shown under the Slots section of the Chassis screen.

I've been reading online and it suggests that if OM is 7.3+ it should work, and the firmware and driver for the card is the latest I could find (via Precision Desktop downloads) but it's still not detected.

Any ideas how to fix?

Increase size of RAID 1 on PowerEdge T300 SAS 6/iR

$

Currently running 2 1TB drives in a RAID 1 on SAS 6/iR integrated controller and a 3rd non-RAID disk for backups. I need to increase the size of the RAID 1. I was thinking I would need to break the array back to 2 individual disks, image one to a larger 2TB drive then create a new array adding a second 2TB drive.

I tried to install the OpenManage software but the DSM Data Manager service stops after using the Server Administrator for a short time. I was going to attempt this in the BIOS utility when I had a thought.

When I image the system for backups(Acronis Recovery Disk, not installed on the system) I am presented with the Virtual Disk. I know in RAID there is data on the drive pertaining to the RAID besides the data of the system itself. Is this extra data present in the Virtual Disk or does the controller handle this and the Virtual Disk is just the system data. What I'm getting at is can I just image the Virtual Disk, remove both drives, create a new array and restore the image to the new bigger Virtual Disk?
