Got New M/Board & RAID Controller Now Dell PowerEdge411 Will Not Boot....

$

Hope someone can help me with this one.

Got water damage and had to replace Dell PowerEdge M/board and RAID Controller Cards.
System now will not boot as it sais the File:  C:'WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is not corrupted,
and suggest I repair with the Original CD by selecting "r' at the first screen to start repair.

I've tried that, but then it tells me the system has no hard drives.  I have 4 hard-drives in this DISK Array,

and I noticed that in trying to trouble-shoot this, it tells me I have RAID 10, but cannot find a way to change it.

I suspect I need something to modify/config the RAID again, but not sure what to use.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks

TonyC

H710P, non-Dell SSDs, and RAID Drive Failure Reporting

$

As long as a non-Dell drive is recognized by the H710P controller, and I'm able to set it up in a RAID, will RAID errors with regard to the non-Dell drives be reported?

I setup a RAID10 (16 x 256GB crucial m4 SSDs) in a R720, and it appears in the OS just fine, but since they aren't OEM drives all the amber lights are always blinking.  I can live with that, but what I can't live with is a non-Dell drive failure within the RAID that isn't reported by the H710P controller, since it isn't Dell branded.

Thanks for any insight!

Adding a Disk to a RAID 5 Array

$

Hello.  I have a PowerEdge R720XD with 4 disks in a hardware RAID 5 Array (#4 is a hot spare, so it is not included in the array itself).  I want to add another disk to the array to increase the useable size, while keeping one hot spare and RAID 5.  OS is Server 2012 Standard (which probably doesn't matter for this conversation)

I installed a new disk (same as the others) into the server.  When I access the Lifecycle Controller, I don't see any option to add a disk to the RAID array.  When I go through the RAID configuration, it looks like reconfiguring the array would destroy the existing array and create a new one, which I would think would destroy my data.  Would reconfiguring the array this way delete all of my data on the existing array?

Does anyone know if I can add a disk to the array without losing my existing data?  And if so, how do I accomplish this?

Battery on Controller PERC H700 Integrated

Hi, I have an error on my Dell server, Battery on Perc H700 Integrated.. 3 1/2 yrs old

Failed message.

We were getting a Backplane enclosure error with a failed drive on the virtual Disk. (Storage Drive 2: Drive Slot sensor for Storage, drive fault was asserted) I replaced the drive and it rebuilt. the backplane error went away. It came back and I replaced that drive which rebuilt ok.  now the Battery has a red X. Is it time to replace the server, the PERV or Backplane, can it be repaired through a frimware update (currently Firmware Version 12.0.1-0083 Driver Version 4.17.02.64)

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Config:

Raid 0 single SSD disk on PERC 710 controller.

Raid 5 12 HDDs on PERC 710 controller.

I have installed debian on raid 0.

After installation, machine reboots and then can't boot directly.

I have selected CTRL-R, CTRL MGMT screen and selected raid 0 VD to boot.

But every time I turn power on, reboot, cold/hot boot, It never boots directly on Debian. It says no bootable media found, then it only boots if I press F11 on this error screen, then select Hard Disk C, then PERC COntroler. Only doing this every time the system finally boots. This is annoying because sometimes I have to reboot and then have to manually do this.

Compatible Drives for Perc 4/SC RAID1

$

I am about to inherit the support role for an ageing PowerEdge server running Server 2003 Standard, and equipped with a Perc 4/SC controller with two Seagate 146GB drives configured as RAID-1. One of the drives apparently failed some time ago, and the client has attempted unsuccessfully to source a replacement drive to repair the array.

Due to other factors it is not feasible to replace the server with a MS Server 2012 build at this stage (though that will be the goal once the current server is stabilised). I propose in the first instance to replace both drives with new 300GB drives, and migrate all data using image backup/restore. Can anyone tell me what drives are compatible with the Perc 4/SC? Specifically, does the Perc 4/SC support SCSI and/or SAS drives (with or without suitable cable adapters, if necessary)? What is the maximum per-drive capacity?

PowerEdge 2900 Constantly drops hard drives

We have a customer with a PowerEdge 2900 with a PERC5i RAID card that has a history of failed hard drives. It was originally configured with eight 250GB drives, set up in a RAID 5. One drive failed out early on and to keep their server up, the customer replaced it with a 1TB, which the RAID controller just treats as a 250GB. The customer has had problems with frequent hard drive failures. We would replace the failed hard drives singly, but it reached the point where we bought the server back into the shop to look over it and try to see if there was something else going on.

This most recent time the complaint was that drives were falling out of the array. I wanted to try to make this thing work, so I replaced those two drives as well as the RAID card, the backplane and the SAS cables, then built a new RAID 5, did a full initialization on it and then ran Dell's 32-bit diagnostics on the entire system. Everything passed multiple loops. To try to further stress the system we ran a command from a linux CD to scan the surface of the drives. At some point over night, a hard drive failed, not one of the ones I had already replaced. So I replaced this one and tested it with Dell diagnostics, again with no errors. We returned it to the customer.

It's only been a couple of weeks and they've had another hard drive fail, in that same slot. The RAID controller reports it as failed and the drive has an amber light. Does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on here? Is there something that could be causing multiple hard drive failures? Could there be something else wrong that is just manifesting as hard drive errors?

iDRAC complaining about my SSD drives

I just bought a new PE T420 with iDRAC.

As soon as I put in my SSD drives they started blinking amber, and the LCD readout says "PDR1101 Fault" for both drives.

Both drives are brand new, and they are both working just fine.  I've built them into a raid 1 array, and they are working just fine.

I've found nothing about this error code online.  Can anyone suggest what I might do?

Non certified drives throwing Faults

$

Hello,

We have a number of Dell blades running Perc h700 and Perc h710 cards.

Most of these are running Samsung 840 pro SSD drives, and Samsung 830 SSD drives - these drives are running perfectly fine, and simply show us as "non certified" and the array is "Non Critical", this causes no problems.

Now we've just installed some servers with the latest crucial 960GB SSD drives, and again it all works fine, but every time the machines boot it's reporting errors into the CMC log :

  • Server 12 health changed to a critical state from either a normal or warning state.
  • Fault detected on drive 0 in disk drive bay 1
  • Fault detected on drive 1 in disk drive bay 1.
Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

2950 Raid battery shows failed in OMSA but bios shows no errors on boot.

I have a 2950 that has a Perc 5i.  Original issue was LED with the error: "W1228 ROMB Batt < 24hr" .  Swapped battery with a new battery that I precharged on a test system.  No errors on boot.   After box loads win2k3 it gives error again even after clearing ESM log and rebooting with new battery still shows error on LED and gives error in OMSA that battery is failed.

Next I swapped the Raid Controller and that cleared the W1228 error.  No errors in bios about battery either on boot.  Go into OMSA and it still shows failed battery.  I have tried two good batteries and both show same issue.   They don't give errros in bios but show failed in OMSA.    Pulled  battery from stock that wasn't precharged and on boot showed error about being discharged.  After 30 minutes rebooted and bios error was cleared.   Which should indicate battery is charging.   Still when I load os and look at OMSA it still shows failed battery with 3 different batteries.  I also swapped battery cable to be sure it was ok. I  Have run SUU and updated all FW and OMSA.

Have no idea where to go from here.

Hi All,

I had a failed battery in our PE2950. I ordered one off of Ebay new and replaced it last week. I then went into OpenManage and ran the learn cycle. After a week I went in and now it is showing as non-critical. I will be going to my DC next week to troubleshoot but I assume I can only plug the wire into the battery one way, correct? Does this appear to be a faulty battery?

I see the drives come up as ready not on-line.

Is it support to have 3 different sizes drives configured as

RAID 5 array, two drives out, down due to controller card

$

Hello,

A client has a 2800 server ( Adaptec 39160, PERC 4e/Di) has a failed RAID 5 due to controller. I was able to match a duplicate 2800 with the same configuration disks, OS, etc.

The RAID 5 array has three disks, of which only one shows online (the logical volume has failed), two drives would/will power up, but have "fallen out" of the array,  when I arrived. My question is since the problem was due to the controller card, is it possible that the data has not been lost?

To make matters worse the tape backup unit had been not working. I had to order the client another tape unit, so I restore data, but older data and put this data set onto a NAS. The sequence of events was due to a lack of understanding that all data could be lost without a tape back up and regular drive maintenance. as well economics on the part of the client. The client was politely warned several times that data loss was quite possible if the drives went/fell out of the array..

Is it possible to move the drives to the working 2800 and recover the array with the working controller?  Or is it that the data was lost even if  the drives did not go bad, die etc?Orr will the disks have to be sent to one of the data rescue services given what has occurred?

In advance thanks for any help.

No hard drive detected or disk controller not supported, R720

Hello all, I installed Server 2008 on R720 sometime back and all was fine until last week when the server wouldn't boot into windows anymore. We decided to run VMWare ESXi on it via a bootable USB but have since faced various issues and error messages:

During boot up: f/w is in fault state, 0xff0f2022)

Then: Baseport adapter is not responding..no adapter

I then ran the Unified Server Configurator's hardware diagnostics and got this message:

No hard drive detected or disk controller not supported

Also got these error codes during the hardware diagnostics:

Error code 2000-0251

Validation 120023

Msg: Event log- The log contains failing records

Can anyone provide a guide on how to fix this issue? I would really appreciate your help. Thanks.

Lifecycle Firmware Update of PERC H710 not listed

When I enter into the Lifecycle Controller and choose firmware update and then use ftp.dell.com I do not see the H710 listed to show me what the current BIOS and available BIOS is.

If I choose to view the current firmware, it shows me that I have H710 with firmware 21.1.0-0007, from last year.  I need to get the newest version as I am troubleshooting an issue with VMware support and they want the latest firmware on the box.

This is a VMWare box so I'm really hoping to be able to use the Lifecycle firmware update.

The Lifecycle controller was able to update the rest of the firmware.
