Dell 6Gbps SAS HBA info

Hi All,

I can't seem to find any good info in the Dell 6Gbps SAS HBA. Is this firmware true IT mode, does it pass the disks and SMART info unmolested to the OS?

I have a Dell T320 which I run FreeNAS ZFS server on it and at the moment I have flashed the PERC H310 to and LSI HBA which works fine but the card no longer integrates with the iDRAC, as would be expected.

Where can I download the latest Dell 6Gbps SAS HBA firmware and bios to flash a H310 using the sas2flash software?

Thanks,

Simon

PERC H310 Firmware

I have a PERC H310 controller that I got for a T110 that I acquired. Yes, I know, it's not 'officially supported', but as is not uncommon, it works fine in the sever, but not so much for OMSA. The problem is, from trying to update the firmware, and in that 'quest', installing Windows 7 to be able to run the Dell firmware update utility (since apparently, there is no way other than through Windows... :( ), apparently, the adapter I have was from a precision workstation. Now, I've read posts from Dell people saying there is no difference between Precision and Poweredge firmware for the H310, but both the upgrade utility and 'support.dell.com' beg to differ. If you pull up a Poweredge T420, the latest firmware you're given for the H310 is 20.13.3-0001. This falls in line with the latest OMSA. If you pull  up a Precision T7600, the latest version for the H310 is 20.12.1-0002. If I try to run the upgrade in Windows using the Poweredge version, I get told that my system isn't supported. And of course, the controller is at the latest version for a Precision workstation. But WHY??? As I stated, I've read, (supposed) Dell people have claiming there is no difference between Precision and Poweredge firmware for PERC controllers..... But there IS!!! So how can I get this H310 up to the latest firmware so that it can be recognized by OMSA 8.5?

PowerEdge 800 (PERC 4) RAID failure; rebuild questions

$

Hello. This is not my machine - a client had it operating quietly for 10+ years without backup. Hurray!  It has 4 x 147GB SCSI 68pin drives in a RAID 5 array.

Anyways, things were supposedly going swimmingly, until they moved the server - after which, it stopped booting and flashed an NVRAM mismatch. OK, the adapter lost its setting - cool. When they brought it to me, they explained that a Dell support rep (warranty? still?) had helped him try to retag the array as 64KB stripe in a RAID 5 array - OK. This isn't a critical system, and it's not the end of the world if it is lost. I tried retagging from disk, but that didn't help - it still wouldn't boot.

I cloned all 4 drives with a spare SCSI non-RAID card before continuing, of course.

Anyways, I'm at my whits' end trying to rebuild this thing - no tagging combination seems to work! I boot from a linux live CD with each attempt, and take a peek at the partition table - which looks OK; however upon read-only mounting of the filesystem  I run into I/O errors, and broken images - basically what you'd see on a bad stripe config. There is about 400MB visible on a disk that should have half of its ~420GB used!

Interestingly, none of the other stripe options bring up a workable partition table or mountable filesystem. I've had no luck with the original images either - both R-Studio and RAID Reconstructor find nothing.

So all that being said - do you guys have suggestions for how this RAID should be built? Right now it's 4 disks, RAID 5 with 64KB stripe (all other options like UREADAHEAD are default). There are only two strange things that stand out to me:

1) The PERC channel listing for the physical disks are all spread-out; rather than 0-3 it's 1, 2, 5 and 8 slots on channel 0 for the drives? Seems weird.

2) The partition table is as follows:

1 Primary partition with 30GB (Windows), followed by an Extended partition, which contains a partition within that has the rest of the data on it (formerly the Data drive). Just a weird way to set it up, I guess? Supposedly this has remained unchanged since the factory shipped it all those years ago.

Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

bootable virtual disk for ubuntu installer

Hi,

I'm trying to install ubuntu server operating system on Dell PowerEdge T630 server. The virtual disk on PERC H730 has "hard Drive C". However I wanted to install the grub in PERC H730 ( as the only hard drive I have). During the installation, the PERC H730 does show virtual disk bootable for ubuntu installer. Hence I'm unable to install the ubuntu on the machine. Can you guys help me to resolve this issue ?

Upgrade the Perc H310

I have an old Dell R520 with a Perc H310 controller currently.  I am re-purposing this server to be a Veeam backup server.  Currently, the performance of the H310 is not that fast.  I am wondering if I can upgrade the controller to a different one that will be faster.  If I change this to a 12GB SAS HBA, will it just be an easy replace?  I will be using all 8 SAS drives, running Windows Server 2016 with Storage Space REFS.  Not really using hardware RAID in this server.  Would it be better to use a PERC H330 and hardware RAID?

Will a Perc H730 work on an R720XD server?

If so, are there any pitfalls I should be aware of?

Hi,

What is the recommended version of firmware and driver for the BCM57800 network card? We had a glitch with the ISCSI connection to a Compellent SAN.

The server is a Winows Server 2012R2 Hyper-V host.

Kind regards,

Carl

I'm planning to reconfigure an r720xd into an all flash setup and would like to split the setup into 3 raid groups. Can I use 3 x H710 controllers (1 for every 8 drives) to improve performance?

I have a  PowerEdge R720 with PERC H710 Mini (Embedded) and 4x HD Seagate ST31000424SS (1TB 7.2K 6G SAS).

I want to fill the enclosure, adding four HD, but I prefer they quicker (15K or 10K), same capacity of 1TB.

which model og HD shall I purchase?

In any case, is possible to make a RAID5 together with existing HD?

many thanks!

PowerEdge R430 S130 to H730?

I have two PowerEdge R430s - both have embedded SATA and the S130 Controller with 4x SATA drives in RAID10.

I would like to transition to the H730 Controller, but have heard this is not possible - since I have an Embedded SATA Chassis.

Am I stuck with two boat anchors - or is there a path forward?

SMART monitoring on H730

Hello,

I want to monitor the SMART parameters of my disks (under Windows 2012) connected to a H730 controller.

Smartmontools are installed, and the controller and devices are recognized.

However, when trying to get the informations for a disk (smartctl -a /dev/sda) :
- generic informations about controller are displayed
- SMART support is : Unavailable - device lacks SMART capabilities

How can I enable the SMART capabilities of the controller ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi

Our Dell T310 with PERC H200 RAID has 2 x 2TB sata drives in it running in Raid 1.

We would like to put 2 x 6TB WD Gold drives in it in Raid 1.

Will the H200 work ok with 6TB sata drives?

PowerEdge T30 RAID

Hello everyone.

I am needing a bit of help with a server PowerEdge T30 my bosses bought.

I read that this model comes with software raid courtesy of intel rapid storage technology, from what I researched software raid is not as good as hardware raid so we are planning of buying a hardware raid controller but I would like to be sure if it is possible for this model of server to function with this kind of controler and which would you recommend, PERC or another one?

In case it is not possible to install a hardware raid controler, how do I set up raid with the Intel software contraller? I looked everywhere and I did not find a good tutorial or guide.

By the way the place i work for is small, is it a good idea to use raid?

Thanks in advance.

PowerEdge R410 - How to run chkdsk on OS Volume

$

Hi...I was wondering how to check my server's OS volume drive. I have a feeling it's degraded somewhat as I'm getting a self-test read error when I preform a short-test on it (see picture) but I cannot seem to find a way of checking the drive. If I take the drive out and put it in another computer, it won't register as a drive letter thus I cannot run chkdsk against it. I have a feeling this is because it's part of the PERC 100 raid. Any ideas on how I can attempt a repair of the drive or am I doomed to re-install the server os?

Thanks in advance!

Configuration problem with poweredge 2900 perc 6/i

Hi,

So what I'm trying to accomplish is it bought a used poweredge 2900 did not have any drives with it. Bought 12 Hitachi 300gb sas drives. The problem that I'm running into right now is when I first installed the drives and powered the system up all drives had green lights, after attempting to configure the array with a new virtual disk the drives show as failed in the physical disk management screen and have blinking amber health lights. However if I reseat the drives they go back to being green light and showing as ready after reboot in the physical disk management screen.

Thanks for any help.

Eventually I plan to install Windows server 2003 r2 on this if I can get that far in the process.
