Re: PERC 5/i and SAS 5/iR - what is maximum disk (SATA) capacity supported by this controllers?

I just purchased a Dell 2950 w/ 6 73g SAS drives in it.  I replaced all six with 2TB SATA drives and it detects the drivers but the drives all fail when I try

to initialize the drives.  Also when i reboot the server my PERC 5i configuration is lost.  Does anyone have any ideas on what i am doing wrong?

Is this safe to enable, Predictive Failure and Revertible Hotspare?

Hello is it safe to turn these to ENABLED:

Abort Check Consistency on Error
auto replace member on predictive failure
allow revertible hot spare and replace member

Is there a pro or con, I read the DOC, but I want to make sure in PRODUCTION Server, is this safe in case of a failed drive one day?

Currently all three are DISABLED. I just want to make sure of no corrupt of data.

Thanks,

Hi,

IHAC who is using R720 with H710 mini, during the configuration for the write-back, they encounter the following message:

Suppose H710 mini come with NV cache and battery, and their battery is in good condition:

Then can they ignore the warning message? and if the battery is in good shape, how come the warning message still shown?

Thanks for any comments.

I've got a 2960 with a PERC6/i with a battery that's either being recalcitrant or it's broken:

(OMSA 7.1.0)
# omreport storage battery
List of Batteries in the System

Controller PERC 6/i Integrated (Slot Embedded)

Status                    : Non-Critical
Name                      : Battery 0

Max Recharge Count        : Not Applicable
Predicted Capacity Status : Ready
Learn State               : Due
Next Learn Time           : 0 hours
Maximum Learn Delay       : 7 days 0 hours

I've tried doing the following:

# omconfig storage battery action=startlearn controller=0 battery=0
Command successful!

But this doesn't seem to start the learning process and the State remains as "Degraded".

Any help, please?  Does it need replacing?

Power Edge 2650 with SATA/SAS drives and WinXP

We have two PE-2650's with the SCSI-SCA drives.  They currently have Red Hat Enterprise installed.  These two boxes have been retired from active use and I would like to re-purpose them.

Problem one is the drives, SCSI-SCA drives are expensive and SATA/SAS drives are just as fast and both cheaper and higher capacity.  Is there still a backplane available for the 2650 and SATA/SAS drives? What else would be needed for this conversion other than a controller card to connect to the SATA/SAS backplane?

Problem two is the OS.  We have two available, legal, licenses for WinXP that would be perfectly adequate for what we are planning for these two systems.  Are there any known driver issues I should be aware of?

Other than the hard drives really, the two systems still have plenty of horsepower for what we have intended for them.  One to be a mini file server and the other running our internal antivirus server.

Poweredge 1950 6/ir intergrated sas driver for windows 2008 64 bit

I am trying to install server 2008 R2 on my Dell Poweredge 1950, but every method I try comes up with errors.

If I use Ctrl-C on start up to create the raid, windows fails to format the partition I create. Whereas the Dell SBUU fails at 15% (clearing partitions) with an unknown error (helpful).

I am trying to find the correct sas control card drivers for server 2008 R2 so that I can install them before windows trys to format the partition.

Anyone know where I can find them? And if not any other ideas?

Thanks

Expanding Storage on R720

$

Hi

We have recently bought a R720 and currently have two 300GB SAS drives (for ESXi 5 install - configured as a mirror) and two 2TB SAS drives (for data - also configured as mirror).

We would like to expand this storage by adding an additional two 2TB SATA drives (to be configured as a mirror). First of all is this possible and most importantly, would we have to reboot into the lifecycle manager to build this additional array, or can it be done 'on the fly'? the vm's on the server are critical and i would prefer not having to shut it down for countless hours, while the array gets built.

Thanks

Karl

I have a Drive on a Raid 1 about to fail and need to replace it. Having not done this in a Long time cannot remember the proper way.

I have a PERC 5i Controller.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I have been using Dell Open Manage Server Administrator.

Unsure if I should take the disk offline then replace it. or what.

Thanks

Problem:

Per report included above, the Drive 1 HD failed and I purchased another HD and dropped it into the hot swap and the controller did a successful rebuild on 9/6/2012.  Came in today and  ran a program - MondoArchive to create a full .iso backup of my system but during the heavy disk I/O the Controller lost it link to the Physical Disk 1 , saying it had been removed, said it found it again and started a rebuild.

Is the Controller going bad?

Since the 1st rebuild on the new drive worked fine and OM reports no issue with the drive or controller, I am stumped.

Ideas?

Thanks for any help on this.

SAS Perc 6/i in PE6950 Firmware Issue

I have added the Perc 6/i in my PE6950, and there seems to be no listing for updating the firmware on this configuration. I can't even locate a firmware update, even though the OpenManage seems to know there is an updated driver out there.

Where do I need to go to get the latest firmware for this combination?

PE2950 with PERC6, Lost a 1TB SAS 72k drive.  Replacements are horribly priced, found Seagate Barracuda 7200 2 TB 7200RPM SATA NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch Internal Desktop Hard Drive STBD2000101   Would like to move over to SATA 2TB drives, if possible.

From what I have gathered, the PERC 6 can handle 2TB Drives no problem, and what I can tell that you can run SATA drives on the PERC controller, but not vice versa, or at the same time as SAS.

I am going to be ordering 5 of these 2TB SATA drives, and an additional caddy.  WIll I need anything else to do this conversion? I've seen some things about a backplane, but I'm not entirely sure if I need that.

The SAS drives were set up with Raid 5 with 2 virtual drives a c: and d:

I'd like to preserve that OS load, is there an easy way I can do this conversion?

Poweredge 2900 E171F PCIE Fatal Err B0 D5 F0 then MPT BIOS Fault 13h encountered at adapter PCI (02h, 08h, 00h)

Hello,

One of our users have a PowerEdge 2900 server that first was giving an Poweredge 2900 E171F PCIE Fatal Err B0 D5 F0 error, then after asking the user to remove and reseat the card as per the online documention for the E171F error ( http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pe2970/en/hom/about.htm), after plugging back the power cord and rebooting the system the user reports it gives the following error : MPT BIOS Fault 13h encountered at adapter PCI (02h, 08h, 00h)

The troubleshooting Expansion Cards step-by-step ( http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pe2970/en/hom/trouble.htm#wp1055534 ) refers to an online diagnostic test at step #1 (Run the appropriate online diagnostic test. See Using the System Setup Program.) Would it be the Dell Diagnostics ( http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&docid=52057&doclang=en&l=en&s=gen&cs=)? I couldn't find any reference to a diagnostic test here : http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pe2970/en/hom/syssetup.htm#wp1054611

This server is out of warranty so I need to know if this issue is fixable (i.e. flashing the card BIOS) or if the card should be replaced, or what are the possible other options.

PowerEdge 2900 E1810 HDD 0,1 & 2 Fault

Hello,

i'm experiencing a serious issue with my power Edge server 2900,

where the RAID Controller can't find any configuration and it's giving this error on it's front panel, E1810 HDD 0 Fault and the same message for the 2 other HDDs.

knowing that the server has these 3 HDDs only.

But when i remove the 1st 2 HDD ( HDD 0 & HDD 1) and start the server, the RAID is recognizing it and showing all the information.

i need to have a solution to be able to rebuilt the configuration, and start back my server, knowing that it used to be a RAID 5 configuration.

attached are different pictures with the 3 HDDs at the same time, and with only one HDD 02.

hope to hear from you since it's an important server and need a solution urgently,

my work depends on your support,

regards,

PS:

the below pictures explains the situation with the 3 HDDs plugged in the server:

the below pictures are only with one HDD inserted HDD 02:

Dell PE2950 III 2.5in SAS drive Limit with Perc6/i

$

Hi Everyone

I have recently bought a dell 2950 III with a perc6/i raid controller, eight 2.5" bay version.

I have read in so many places the highest drive size I can use is 146GB 10K SAS however this would render my plans useless as im using it for backups.

If I use the latest bios and raid controller firmware what is the maximum 2.5" SAS drive and speed I can install into the system. For instance I'd like to use the first two for OS mirrored (73GB) and then the remaining six bays for 450GB, 600GB 1TB 2TB (whichever decide to choose)  however confused if this is possible.

Thanks

System: Power Egde R420, Perc H710, 4x 1TB Sata disk,

There was a raid 5 with 4 disk. 1 disk is displayed as foreign (online).

In the disk utility,   i cleared the foreign configuration. the mentioned disk show 2 green LED. After a while the disk blinks orange, and then it shut off.

Physical disk shows me just the other 3 disk.

When I reboot the system, all disk are again there, but the one who was foreign is displayed foreign (online) again.

What can I do to reset the disk, so that I can create a Raid 5 with 4 disk?????

Please help
