I recently received a new poweredge T420 ( 2 days ago ). I installed RHEL 6.3 and everything seems to be running smoothly. Nevertheless, I keep hearing a click sound even when the server is idle. I can hear the sound on a regular basis. Like every 10 seconds or so. At first I though that I had been sold a defective HDD (came with the server, 1 TB SATA hot plug connected to a PERC H310 in non-raid mode). After doing some reading I learnt that this sound could be due to an aggressive power management policy in the HDD that may result in frequent unloads.
Apart from the fact that the sound is annoying, these frequent unloads are bound to have a negative impact upon the HDD lifespan. I've tried to change the drive's powersaving settings using hdparms, but that doesn't seem to work. Is there anything I could do to change the HDD settings? Your help will be greatly appreciated.
