Windows server 2008 Web edition wont boot after windows update - hangs on crcdisk.sys BSOD error 0x0000007b on DELL R710 with Perc 6/i Raid 5 array

My 2008 server on DELL R710 with Perc 6/i Raid 5 array went through a long windows update process (which it hasnt done for a long time)..

so dozens of packages were installed. after restart , the O/S crashed with BSOD eror 0x0000007b.
safemode crashes an reboots while loading crcdisk.sys
chkdsk passes without errors.
I dont have a system backup and there is no startup repair in 2008 server.
I am able to see all my data if i boot from a second drive and make this secondary.
I am able to see my data if booting from RE and going into command mode.
I am unable to boot the OS though.
I have a raid 5 setup.. all seem healthy and optimal.
i really need to find a way to solve this.
any ideas ??

Hi,

I  need a replacement for my faulty battery in my PE2950 server. Do you know any trusted and liable company in UK aside from DELL who are selling this item. They need to ship it from UK to Bahrain.

thanks,

Reconfigure option not there for virtual disks

I've recently added two more drives to our VM server and wanted to add them to the existing raid 5 array of three drives. Dell said this can be done using Open Manage (7.2) but after installing there is no reconfigure option on the drop down on the virtual disk. I've reported this to Dell but have yet to hear anything back.

Has anyone else experienced this or have a solution?

Raid layout or recommendations for multiple VM server

I'm getting a pretty wide variety of suggestions and feedback from research and asking around as to the best solution in a raid layout for a specific server build. Cost is somewhat of a concern but performance and long term use are the primary concerns.

Server will host two VM's, a SQL Express business app with large document storage folder as well as Terminal Server or RDS. Host will be Server 2012 full GUI with Hyper V to take advantage of 1_2 licensing and downgrade as guest must be Server 2008r2 (granted one is RDS so let's skip that license issue for now as I'm only concerned with hardware). Server product will be a T620 with 12 drive bays, dual Xeons and 64-98GB of ram. I am more interested in comments from Dell techs and Dell experts that have worked at length with various Raid builds and can give some real answers as to why they suggest one build over another. As IOPS are key here even if it is SQL Express and I want long term use of the server let's also assume 15K SAS drives.

My thoughts were to break out the host OS on a set of mirrored SAS 10k drives. The host disk should be all but idle 99% of the time. If I use 10k drives this does give me an option for splitting off a VHD for the SQL VM's paging file so it is on it's own drive set. For the SQL business app I was thinking Raid 10, 4 drives or maybe 6 (300GB vs 600GB drives to get to near same resulting space) then a mirrored set of 10k SAS drives for the RDS VM, all on a H710 1GB nvram.

Some comments have said breaking out to many arrays on the PERC will slow down performance. Other comments have said to just go one big array. Based on my currently deployed servers I'm pretty sold on the host OS being on it's own set of mirrored drives so given that should I just go with RAID 10 and 6 drives? This would leave 4 bays open if I needed to add drives in a year or two, build another Raid 10 array and move a VM from one to the other with little downtime. Raid 6 really isn't an option as the requirement to get any gain would increase the server price due to the number of drives and result in marginal gains. I'm not sold on SSD's for long term use especially for SQL with all the writes and I've not seen any real information on deploying SSD's in anything other than a mirror and how higher raid levels might cause more memory wear and gain you nothing in IOPS.

No RAID Properties in LSI SAS Bios

Hello. I have bought a few days ago a Dell server PowerEdge 1950. I have installed Windows 2003 server on it (adding LSI 1068 drivers to detect HDD).

The problem: I want to configure RAID 1 (data mirror) and using this (http://www.lsi.com/downloads/Public/SATASAS%20HBAs/SATASAS%20HBAs%20Common%20Files/IR-SAS_UserGuide.pdf) tutorial at page 27 Figure 3.1 Adapter Properties Screen I don't have RAID Properties. Any ideas what can be a problem? Server has two disks plugged.

Bellow I attached DSET full system log and screens from LSI SAS UI (ctrl+c when booting). Thanks a lot for help!

Assistance Adding Hot Spare

PE T320 Windows Server 2008R2

BIOS Up to Date

I have a RAID 5 array consisting of (3) 500 GB disks and Perc S110 Controller.  All are Hot-Swap SATA Drives.  I've purchased a 4th SATA Drive, same capacity and speed.  Powered down, inserted drive and restarted.

I went straight to OMSA (7.2) and, although first drive is visible, shows as Normal and Non-RAID, the only drop down choices are Blink and Unblink.

So I rebooted and entered BIOS Configuration.  Again, new drive appears but Manage Hot Spare(s) option is grayed out and not selectable.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong and any help would be appreciated.  As a side note, activity light on new disk is blinking consistently.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Have a Raid 5 with a Perc /6I controller. Drive failed pulled it out replaced. Drive went to ready state. Clicked on F2 for options only option available was to make into hot Spare. Did this. It didn't really do much except name it a Got Spare. Still not other option and Raid stil says offline. Rebooted still nothing get an error saying that there is a problem with the virtual drive and preserved dirty cache. Went back into VD Management drive still says hopt spare. Clicked  on controller settings  hit F2 asked me to discard cache or hit cancel. Hit cancel tells me it has a preserved cache (Pinned Cache) No options after this no option to import any configuration. Raid still Offline. Any help much appreciated

PERC 5/I PCI-EXPRESS SAS RAID CONTROLLER - All HD showing Failed

Hello,

I have a Dell PowerEdge 1900 server. 3 HD in raid 5.

I turned on the server today and it would not boot into Windows. I checked in the PERC 5/I Intergrated Bios configuration utility and it's showing under PD Mgmt all 3 Seagate hard drives in State: Failed.

When I f2 (operations) each of the hard drives everything is greyed out. I cannot do anything to them.

I have talked to a few people and everyone has suggested that it's the PERC 5/I Controller. I have two of them on order to be delivered for tomorrow morning.

I just want to make sure I am not overlooking anything before this.. I cannot lose this data!.. I find it odd that all 3 drives would fail at once. I have had no issues with them up until this point.

I also update to the latest firmware.

Any help/suggestions would be great.

Thanks - Matt

But I need to now if I can put a 500Gb SAS-2 HDD in my server. Does the RAID will work correctly? I think that it will works at the SAS speed, but it's not important.

Hi all,

I have a Power Edge T300 with RAID controller PERC 6/i with 3 HD and 1 Virtual Disk (all 3 physical disck are in the virtual disk in a RAID 5 configuration).

In september I installed the Preview Edition of Datacenter 2012 R2 with no problems at all.

Now when I try to install the Datacenter 2012 R2 Evaluation edition (released on 18th October) Windows show me this message:

I tried to load this drivers DELL_MULTI-DEVICE_A07_R211424 and DELL_MULTI-DEVICE_A03R210510 but I recieve always this message:

Here http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/b/techcenter/archive/2013/09/05/windows-server-2012-r2-rtm-inbox-driver-support-on-dell-poweredge-servers.aspx it seems the PERC 6/i drivers are built in WIndows Server 2012 R2.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Perc 5/iR RAID hdds firmware compatibility

Hi,

I have PE sc 1435 servers with LSI Perc5/iR RAID sata/sas controller.

My HDDS are all Seagate Cheetah T10 ST3300555SS 300Gb firmware T105; I bought a HD replacement but raid controller indicates it how "wrong type".

May be a firmware problem?

or is simply broken?

If there is a firmware problem, can I upgrade old HDD (without loss data)? or downgrade new HDD?

regards,

Maurizio

PE2850 Memory/battery Issue detected

Getting a memory/battery issue detected notification when I boot up replaced the battery and that didn't resolve the issue. Is there anyway to test the memory on the raid controller itself? Wont boot tells me I'm missing ntoskrnl.exe which im guessing is because it can read the raid array.

How to clear a foreign disk config on a Power Edge R320

$

Hi,

I have a couple of Dell PowerEdge R320 servers that I needed to perform maintenance on. Each server has 3 disks in a RAID 1 config with a dedicated hot spare (disks 0:1:0, 0:1:1 and 0:1:2). I needed to make some emergency changes and needed a roll back. I did the following

1. Power off server
2. Remove disk 0:1:1
3. Powered on server
4. Configured application x,y,z

Because it wasn't clear whether my config changes would work straight away, I simply popped disk 0:1:1 back in and left the server with 2 disks and an unassigned hot spare.

Several weeks have passed and I now need to assign disk 0:1:1 as a hot spare. Within Dell OMSA and DRAC I do not have options to assign foreign disk "0:1:1" as a hot spare.

On a server reboot I get the message "Foreign configurations found on adapter. Press any key to continue or 'C' to load the configuration utility, or 'F' to import Foreign Configurations and continue). I usually just ignore these messages and after a minute or os, the server loads into Windows.

Could someone please point out the exact steps I need to undertake to be able to assign disk 0:1:1 as a hot spare. I suspect it's relatively straight forward, but I need to avoid a mistake like the plague as accidentally blatting this particular server would be very bad for my health!

Thanks

I've got a T610 that has failed to boot.  Error message is Firmware Failed Validation Adapter needs to be reflashed.  The RAID card is p/n or374m which apparently is the PERC H700. Downloading the firmware update files, dropping them on a bootable flash drive, and booting, the update util hangs at "Searching for the PERC H700 Integrated."

Help please?

Replace Bad Perc 4/DC in PE 1850

$

I have an old PE 1850 with what I believe to be a bad Perc 4/DC card.  Server will not POST with card installed regardless if drives are inserted into the backplane or not.  Even after allowing a long period of time, will not go past the initial RAID scan.  I have located a used Perc 4/DC controller on Amazon but I'm truly hoping to get the server back online when the card arrives.  I know that the RAID configuration is also located on the drives but I need to know the correct procedure to replace the card and maintain my existing RAID configs for my RAID1 boot volume and the RAID5 storage volume.

Thanks for any input.

Ken
